Xopanex

3 year old dd using xopanex (.63/day) since diagnosis (a few months ago). What I am noticing is that it seems she coughs more now that we use this medication. For all of you who have been at this awhile, is this the "normal" response of this med? Before diagnosis and now "treatments", she didn't really have a cough, although i understand by opening up the bronchiol tubes, she in theory is able to cough up the mucus.

Thoughts??

On a similar note, I actually just finished one of her Xopanex treatments myself and I felt dizzy afterwards with a "parched" throat.

Thanks!

what you experienced with the dizzyness is a normal effect, as is the jitters, but its less than with regular albuterol I've never felt that xopanex made me cough, but I can feel it opening up the airways though, it's incredible the difference it can make. The parched throat is also not uncommon
What other medications is she using? hypertonic saline (hypersal) will make you cough more, and pulmozyme will break up and loosen mucus so at first it will make you cough more but that should lessen with time and go back to a baseline cough after a while

I've found if I feel kinda junky before I start my xopenex it will make me cough, and like the other response you got said the other effects are pretty par for the course.

Thanks for your replies. In response to your question, she isn't taking any other medication. Just this one.

Hi..I do xopenex before all of my other treatments, and I have always noticed that when I do my first treatment in the morning, the xopenex makes me immediately cough this dry cough that makes hard chunks of mucus come out...
And I always, always feel dizzy for about 10 seconds after inhaling it! Ah well.. I know it makes a difference.

@edan I have a very reactive asthma component. As a result I will often have an initial reaction-coughing, sometimes a tightening-to bronchodialators, such as xopenex. Typically after 15-30 minutes stuff will calm down. I don't know if this could be a possibility with your daughter.
