I don't understand the question. You mean if people call us CFers, or something? Because I don't find that offensive at all. But I'm really a very open person, and I never hide it, so I'm different than some others.

I don't mind at all...I'm used to it because when I'm in the hospital because I'm called that all the time. Sometimes it's sweet because if the respiratory therapist giving me CPT gets a page they have to finish "my cystic" up before they go to the page. When they use it it's kinda like we're a priority. It is on the "Patient Bill of Rights" at CHildren's of Michigan. It says "patients are not to be labeled or called by their disease. It doesn't offened me at all,Emily 22 pwcf

Hello, Don. I am not offended, either. I guess I could see how a parent might get a little offended, though. Myself, i like the term 'cystic fibrosian' just because it sounds cool. =-)Jarod22 with cf

hey, personally i dont get offended by any term, although i can see how many people find "cystic" or "sufferer" derogitory and negative. me and my mates generally use the term PWCF (people with CF) and are trying to spread its use!

I've heard terms like those many tiimes... doesn't bother me at all. Heck, at least when they say that, I know that they know what they're treatingIt occurs to me that if this doesn't bother the daughter (which wasn't stated) than it shouldn't bother the mom.If it does bother the daughter, than I'd love to have her health- if that's all she has to worry about

HI, My daughter is still young and I don't mind the correct name of the disease being used because I feel that it helps to raise awareness. The only term that bothers me is when people compare her to "normal" kids. She is quite normal and I usually correct them and ask that they compare her to healthier kids, so she is not labelled as abnormal.Just a little quirk I have, and I even correct the staff at the cf clinic. It is never done maliciously but it bothers me just the same.

When I went into the hospital (which was quite frequently) I was well known. Obviously because I was there all the time... When we had new residents (doctor in training not new patient...) come in I was always described as Candice the CFer or the Cystic... It's not meant to be offensive in any way. It's just a short term to sum up what we have been through (if that is possible) or what we have. It in no way bothered me at all. It's a way of easily describing what I have. It's no problem for me. Also what I find really weird... My initials are CF and I have CF.... Talk about Screwy.~Candicea.k.a. ImmortalGoddezz

My two cents would be that... as long as the doctors, nurses, and whoever else treat me as if I am a person with feelings as opposed to just a pin cushion, or a fun case to come stare at, they can refer to me as whatever they want. Heh.

I dont find it offensive, and I really dont understand why anyone would. We (people w/ CF) were born with this condition and we're all dealing with it the best we can. If you get called a "CFer" or something, its like, "Hey, I have something that a lot of people dont have, and I'm dealing with it." Its kind of a compliment if you really think about it.....you were born with this, your dealing with it, and your trying to live life to the fullest, no matter how different you are!

I also pretty much agree with everyone on this. Why should we be offended?? Do you really want to say "Cystic Fibrosis patient" all the time?? You usually don't here people calling an AIDS patient as an Acquired Immune Dificiency Syndrom patient. We're a society of abbreviasions, acronyms, and nicknames. We are Cystics, or CF patients. It's in no way derogatory, just makes it easier on everyone to say and identify with.

Hey, I am a 15fw cf and I have only been labled a CFer, But when people call me "diseased" Or they question me if they can get it from me or they act as if I have AIDS or something, then I do get offended. But once you get older you realise that people (most in this case) Dont mean to harm you or offend you. I have also learned that if you should come right out and tell people that you have CF, because it makes them more aware of it, and in the end its all worthwhile.By the way.... Can i be in your show? Im a very good actress... to reply me back e-mail me at littlepink_star@sbcglobal.net THANKS!

RE:Your opinion on the term "cystic" or"Cysti" is it offensive to you?

I am 19 years old.. And I was born w/ CF. The only people that knows that I have CF is my family. I don't tell any of my friends. I don't want them to treat me different or anything from everyone else. I hide my medicine when people come over my house. When I go out w/ them I shove them in my mouth all at once.See when I was younger my mom treated me different than my 2 brothers. Like since I never ate she would bride me with candy bars and all that good stuff. But that didn't work cause I don't like that kind of stuff. I weighed like 40 - 50 pounds all in elementry school.. When it was cold or rainy I wasent aloud to go out and play with my friends like my brothers.. My parents would always watch out for me more than my brothers and I hated that...

I hope you are not hiding this from your friends because you are ashamed or embarassed. You have nothing to be ashamed or embarassed. Telling all your friends I think would be good for you becasue you would find out who your real friends are.Dave 29 w/cf
