alternatives to prednisone

Hey guys!

I have TERRIBLE asthma symptoms that seem to get worse with age. This year I've already been on two, at least month-long, high courses of prednisone (I start at 60mg). It works wonders for my breathing but after only a week of it, everything else goes in the crapper. I'm unbelievably insulin resistant despite diet change and insulin increase and my sugars rarely make it below 300 (swallowing air makes my sugar soar ). Plus, there's the bloating, the hunger, the puffiness. I get moonface really badly, too, and get embarrassed by it often (everyone notices it and tells me about it). I was looking online for alternatives to prednisone and found cromolyn and nedocromil - both of these are inhaled. Have any of you ever tried these? Are they effective in relief and/or prevention of inflammation symptoms? My inflammation gets so bad to the point that I feel like I'm suffocating...but I hate being on prednisone so much as it makes me feel like the bad ends up outweighing the good. Do any of you have any other alternatives?

I've tried advair, all three strengths, and it doesn't seem to help much...not in the summer, anyway. I'm on flovent, but feel like it's doing nothing. When my inflammation gets really bad like this, I could easily neb albuterol every hour (I don't, of course).

Any suggestions would be great, thanks!
I adore my cromolyn sodium. If I'm not on it, I definitely feel worse.

I'm on prednisone pretty much indefinitely at this point. I don't know about you but in addition to getting all the side effects you mentioned I'm also really nasty (short-tempered) and get hot flashes about three or four times a week.

I talked to both sets of doctors (I see two pulmonologists) about alternatives and they both kinda shot me down and said "It doesn't control the type of inflammation we're looking to control". So then I was kind of like- well, you tell us this is all supposed to be a huge freaking "cooperation" and we're supposed to "own our health" but you find some excuse to shoot down a drug you've never heard of. I have never been so enraged at being shot down like that in my life. I'm sure the prednisone didn't help. ;P

That sucks, April.

Tell them Dr. Warwick has all of his patients on it - maybe they'll change their tune

Yes, yes, and yes!!! I am on Tilade (nedocromil sodium) and that has shown me the singular most drastic improvement in my PFTs and overall health since beginning. I actually call it my miracle drug. As of March/April of this year my PFTs were bottoming out in the mid 30s for no good reason apart from the asthma. No new bugs, no congestion or productive cough, just couldn't get the air to move. Was on Pred and did several rounds of IVs, started tobi again, and I was still literally getting worse by the day. The prednisone did help but not nearly enough, and like you experienced it messes with everything else horribly, sugars were scary high. I started Tilade in mid April and had so much improvement that I could hardly believe it could be true. I'm still on 20mg pred every other day (down from 60mg daily) and PFTs are hovering around 68%. So, long story short, YES, Tilade works (for me) and I can't imagine that suggesting it to your doctor would be a bad idea.

I too have nasty asthma related to CF. Spent much of the last ten years with rib fractures from the dry coughing fits. What really helps for me (discovered it during a broken rib bought) is hydrcodone. It gets everything to relax and take a break, which after 16 hours of nonstop coughing, is a blessed relief. The downside, its quite addictive, few docs seem to know about its anti-cough properties, and if used only ocassionally, you need to watch out for it affecting judgement or interacting with other meds. But if the other meds and nebbies arent controlling the tightness and coughing, this really works for me.

Erin, I feel for you! Other asthma meds dont work very well for me, and I am a hog unlimited on pred, and it makes me a bit short-tempered. Good luck!
