Constipation and Pregnancy

How did you rectify the situation?

Pre-preg. I pooped 1-2x per day. Now I'm 1x every 2-3 days. Has anyone backed off their pancreatic enzyme during pregnancy to 'loosen' up their stool? I know, I know...talk to a doctor before making changes to my meds. but just wanted to hear from you all about your experience.

Lauren,

My "poop" situation is different than yours, but during my pregnancy I got very constipated. So I started taking metamucil with breakfast. I liked mine thicker with some ice mixed in. It was pretty easy to take and after about 5 days, I noticed a HUGE difference. I used it until I was about 5 months.

No DO NOT lighten up on your enyzmes-that will give you the loose stools you are talking about for maybe the 1st day or 2-and after that it will actually contribute to constipation. That's why we get intestinal blockages, b/c of not enough enzymes.

Not sure if you remember when I first found out I was preg, I rushed to the ER when I was about 5/6 weeks along. I thought I was losing the preg or had an ectopic preg b/c the pain was so bad in my abdomen-I had an intestinal blockage, a very bad one. That whole week I had skipped days pooping too, and just felt icky and full. Normally I go 1-2 times a day and I was going once every other day. That was a bad experience! Fortunately I was able to get rid of it with drinking tons of water, prune juice, and my herbal intestinal formula, which I wouldn't take during preg but that was an extreme situation. I now take 4-5 enzymes with meals and drink lots of water, and I started Sensitive Colon Support supplement by New Chapter-good old new chapter....Its a probiotic with fiber all in one. I love it, its kept me very regular. And my doc said its perfectly safe. Just an fyi, in case you are having trouble. I do know that my doc said I shouldn't take any Metamucil/Fibersol type drink things while preg.

But whatever you do, do something b/c you sound just like I was! Be careful!<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

Just another thought about cutting back on enzymes-you'll also absorb less from your food and the baby needs all the nutrients it can get from your food right now. Just food for thought.....

Constipation is common in pregnancy even without CF. I wouldnt recommend cutting back on enzymes. Ask you doctor what they recommend to keep things going. I would think you need to continue what they suggest thru the pregnancy.

I had this really bad in my last trimester - I mean BAD. I tried fiber, but that doesn't alwasy work. I tried cutting back one enzyme less (and I never consult my doc about sh*t) - did nothing. Stool softners - that helped the most but by no means was it the end of the mess, but I could at least go after that. Lots of water will help also. good luck, it really stinks, I know.

I don't have CF but am 27 weeks along and had the same problem. My OB put me on a prenatal vitiamin with a stool softner in it. It has truly been a blessing. I can tell if I forget to take it because my abdomen becomes "full" like. Hope this helps.
