I have twin boys that were diagnosed with CF 11 months ago on the NBS. We just moved and are getting records together before they will make an appointment for us here. The boys have only had a few symptoms early on and were born at 27 weeks so they don't know if they were because of the prematurity or CF. We did appointments monthly for a while and then quarterly and were never told about physical treatments that are harmless but could really help, especially when sick.

Question:

How long do they take? Are they painful? What are the benefits? Does anyone know if this is suggested to patients who seem to be doing fine?

When Ashlee was born and diagnosed, we started chest percussion therapy for about 10-15 minutes 1-2 times daily. She only had digestion issues to begin with. But we still did the percussions for preventative.

She started Pulmozyme when she turned 2, even though she still had not yet had lung involvment. She has been on that since and just recently had her first IV hospital admission this past Feb...she is 5 now. Now she is on Hyper Saline 7% regularly as well.

It is always good to start early to get them used to the therapy which will in turn make it easier when it is very necessary. Otherwise when the time comes, they will fight it (might anyways at a certain age, but this lowers that chance since they will be used to the routine).

When sick you would increase the treatments to more minutes and/or more times per day.

Jordin, my 11 month old has been doing nebulizers and chest therapy since just after birth, but she has much lung involvement already.

PM me if you have any questions or need to talk to someone <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0">)

With twins I was worried I wouldn't have the time in the day to do any treatments. I would never let that be an excuse but this seems like I can work it into their schedule with out them missing much. Your daughters are just super cute, what a blessing.

Thanks,
Laura
