How long...

Jennifer-I only skimmed through posts so forgive me for possibly repeating things.

If you live within1 hour of a infertility clinic then you can have him do the deposit at home and you can even drive it in. I have also known others who when giving samples for IUI's etc would get a hotel roomwithin an hour so as to avoid the clinic.

We went in for our infertility work up after abotu same scenario as you and there is hope! They ordered an SA for DH but he didnt want to do it and it was so far from where he worked and couldnt get time off PLUS we were POSITIVE it was me <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> anyway after months of failed drugs etc he did go in and get the SA and low and behold we wasted all those months doing drugs for no reason as there was still barely a chance at all we woudl get pregnant with his sprem and we immediately had to do IVF.

Dont be to hard on him as it is very intimidating for them two fold one doing it in 'public' nasty place - my dh woudlnt even sit in chairs or touch things in room it felt too 'dirty' anyway and 2ndly that if the test shows bad they feel de-masculinated.

Dont be too hard on yourself either as a fertility doc wont even look at you until after a year becuase it is very common if everythign 100% perfect to take a while.

the test to clear the fallopian tubes just puts dye through them but for whatever reason alot women get pg after this test on their own even when it appears tubes already open-it's called a sonohystogram and it is a horrid test!

I agree dont call insurance look up in your plan on a website or have somene else with your plan call if you knwo someone as sometimes they will cover sono's or u/s until they find out for IF so sometime sit will slide through.

I think that is all I was thinking. Best of luck to you I know how hard it can be

Thanks, Girls!!!

Two questions:

1.) the tube/dye test - Does it hurt? Is it an in and out test? Some basic information please...

2.) the most likely first test - sperm analysis
****mom2lillian****
Your experience sounds VERY SIMILIAR to mine. What did you all try? Did you have regular cycles? Did you ovulate? Did you use Robitussin? I am dying to know!!! You said it was ultimately your husband. What can be done to correct infertility if someone's spouse is the sterile one? Only IVF? What causes a man to be sterile? I'm sorry to be so personal!!! I'm really sorry!!! But you seem to be the greatest source that best reflects me and my situation! You can PM me if that's better. But you don't have to answer anything at all, though. No pressure!

Jennifer - the test is called a histerosalpingogram (hsg). I have heard differetn women give different responses about it. For some it was horrible. To me, it was no big deal at all. I did take valium and tylenol before (they offer the valium, you don't have to take it - but you might have to ask for it - I like valium, so I was all about it - anyway!) Then they basically stick in a speculum, then thread a catheter through your cervix - I had minimal cramping, some women have more - they shoot in the dye, watch on a screen how it flows and thats that. For me, it was no big deal at all.

For men, my understanding is it depends what is wrong. SOmetimes it is just a matter of starting to wear boxer shorts instead of tighty whities. Other times I think there are things that can be done like stop using tobacco products. I am not sure what else medically can be done, but often I believe it doesn't mean IVF. It can mean that you need IUI though, if they are poor swimmers or the count is low as that gives them a hand. Obviously if the count is drastically low or there isn't any, you have to use IVF.

I don't know as much about the sperm stuff, I bet others (mom2lillian) know more on that, but if you have other other hsg questions, I can tell you more about that deal. Good luck kid!

and, just so you know, my husband's sperm count was perfect, and it still took us 15 months and IUI - so it may just be a matter of waiting and relaxing (ya right, I know) and maybe aiding things along with an IUI or fertility drugs.
