Working moms vs. stay at home??

I don't exactly know how to word my question, but I am trying to get an idea of what some of the families on this message board did or do as far as childcare for their little ones. I have a healthy (as far as we know) 3 year old daughter in daycare now and I am 22 weeks preggo with a little boy that was diagnosed through amnio with CF. I work full time and am struggling with trying to figure out what I am going to do after this little guy is born. What did some of the families on here end up having to do once they found out their little ones had CF? Were you able to continue working, or do you stay home now? I would love to hear any and all experiences you are willing to share!

Thanks!!

My first born I had no choice but to work,my ex husband was in military and just to afford formula and co payments I needed to work. We fortunatley found a woman who babysat in her home and she was only taking one . Of course the first two weeks I called her evry 20 mins or so to check in. She was fantastic. I remember going to pick him up and she was crying casue when she burbed him her fingernail grazed his cheek you could see no mark. she cut her nails off right then. Her family and ours became very close and when I had my second she was all set to watch and was excited casue she had boys and was watching my son and now she was getting a girl to watch too. When my son was in the hospital I would go there before work and after. Eventually my two did go to daycare I woiuld have worried except my sitter got a job there. When my 3rd came along my ex and i decided I should stay home as my check was going for daycare and gas.

The company I work for now is pretty flexible in fact when my daughter age 22 was in and out and I needed to be there they allowed me to work from hospital room as I had a laptop and wireless and hospital had free wifi, Also I can work from home . I think you have to weigh can you work from home what is your companies FMLA policies, Financially do you have to work. Also I know babysitting expenses can be different .

Not sure if this helps

You will likely get as many stories as there are members here. I've always worked, but I have very flexible hours so I only needed a sitter about 12 hours a week to cover my childcare for a full time position. I've had great success having an adult sitter in my home who was able to do my daughter's treatments etc. My job is flexible enough that when my daughter has been in the hospital that I've been able to be with her the entire time. Honestly, so much will depend on your sons specific medical needs. My daughter had a rough start, but has been pretty healthy other than occasional bouts that needed hospital stays. She's in school now and I don't need any child care at all anymore.

I work full time, as does dh. DS went to a daycare center at age 3 months. We thought long and hard about our decision. The doctor indicated if the daycare kept the infants away from the germy toddlers and had good germ control procedures, he should be okay. DS was one of 6 babies in the baby room. He was probably the healthiest. We figured we'd rethink things if ds did have issues, but he was probably the healthiest of all his friends.

Our jobs are flexible in that we have time available to take off for appointments. When DS had an ear infection as a baby one of us took off work and grandma was around for back up.

I know many people will disagree with this, BUT Our CF clinic told us that statistically children with CF who do NOT attend daycare until after the age of 3 do better with their health.

Since I made ALOT more money than my husband. I continued to work full-time and he stays home with our daughter. To help with finances, he worked part-time in the evening and is now starting up his own business out of our home.

Our daughter will be 4 in December. She has never been hospitalized (yet) and is doing very well.

My husband and I both work full time, but both in our family businesses. So, that being said, my parents, as well as his, are very understanding when we need extra time off to address medical issues with our girls

We asked our CF clinic about daycare, and they were all for it! They told us that they were going to catch colds just like other kids. They said that they might as well catch all these colds and build up the immunity to them while in daycare when missing daycare doesn't 'count' instead of starting grade school and catching everything and missing out on their education.

Yes, they did catch colds. But no more than any other kids. We started antibiotics during those normal 'colds' just as a precaution. My younger daughter, Hannah, is 12 years old, and has never been in the hospital and has a FEV1 of 100%. She started daycare at 6 months old.

My older daughter, Kayla, is 13 and she has been hospitalized four times, her first time in 2nd grade, last time the end of 7th grade. Her FEV1 is 90%. But, I don't think Kayla being hospitalized has anything to do with being in daycare...she actually didn't start daycare until she was 2 years old! (She wasn't dx with CF until she was 14 months old, so that was not a factor in not sending her to daycare when she was a baby...she stayed with my mom and my mother-in-law when she was a baby...she was sent to daycare to learn to socialize with other kids!)

Now, that being said...I think you have to do what is best for your family. My schedule is VERY flexible. I do work full time, but have never missed a single volleyball game or a single time they have went out to cheer for a basketball game. I am at every dr appt. When Kayla is in the hospital I get to stay with her 24/7. When she has been on home IV's, I can work my schedule to be home to take care of her. It may not be so easy if you don't have a flexible job.

Good luck and congrats on your new little bundle of joy

Hi there, our doctors also encouraged us to keep our son out of daycare & playgroups until at least 3. This wasn't an issue because I had stopped working when I became pregnant with him. Before I even knew he had CF. My sons first 3 years we took the doctors advise and avoided the playgroups. My sons first 3 years I think we only had one runny nose, one fever. Very uneventful! Last year johnny started preschool for 3 hrs a day. We caught some colds, but Johnny did fine. Last year we had a hospital stay because of his tummy (bowel obstruction from scar tissue). No fun!!!
Now at 4 years old my son his back in preschool 3 hrs a day. He loves it and is learning so much. I'm happy to see the growth that school has provided.

This is a great site for all your questions.
