For those on Oxygen

I am curious about a few things concerning using O2.
I have been off and on it for almost a year now. This year i have been on it way more after having 3 embolizations in such a short amount of time. I always wear it to sleep, and some days i use it during the day. There are times when i use it while walking, or doing anything physical like cleaning, vacuuming,( even talking sometimes) i still get out of breath. Shouldnt using O2 <b>keep</b> me from getting out of breath? Maybe i am expecting too much from it, i always thought when you used O2 you would no longer get out of breath. I must admit it certainly makes it easier to catch my breath when i sit down or finish coughing. Any one else care to share any experiences?

What is your flow rate at? You might need to increase the rate at times when doing more physical activities. Talk with your doctor about it. Do you have an O2 saturation machine? If not, and you can get one, it would help if you can check your O2 sat rate. Anything below 90 may require an increase in flow rate for a short period of time. Also, make sure you are breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. That will also help increase your O2 sat.

Basically, from what I could gather, being SOB or NOT SOB is not always a good indicator of where your sats are. There are many people with COPD or other lung disorders who tend to get SOB; however, their stats are in an acceptable range. On the flip side, you can also have low sats and not be SOB. Sooo what does that mean for you? Like others have said it is important for you to have a pulse ox, know what your limitations are, know what is a good liter flow for you.

For me, I get a very funny feeling in my head when my sats fall below 90. I am in a good range most of the time; but, when I hit that magic number I feel it. I can breath deeply or get SOB; but, my sats are still above 90 with some exertion; but, that feeling in my head is a real cue for me. I am not on O2 during the day and I stay really above 95 most of the time. When I got my pulse ox I wore it a LOT and tested in many different situations to get a real good feeling of what my limitations were and where my sats were sitting.
