lung function numbers

My boyfriend has cystic fibrosis and I have been trying to find out more about it. He had described his lung function numbers before as one measuring his upper respiration (numbers around 90) and one measuring his lower, smaller lung areas (numbers around 70). He doesn't know the names for either of the measurements. Do these correspond to FEV and FVC? Which one is which?

basically...FVC is a measurement of inhalation, FEV1 is exhalation. Since you can't blow out what you don't have in the FVC value always has to be higher. A predicted of 90% FVC is normal, 70% FEV1 is mild.

I believe FEV stands for Forced Expiratory Volume. I'm not sure what the 1 in FEV1 is for though. For a PFT they have us breath normally into a mouthpiece, blow out our air, take a really big breath in and the blow-blow-blow until you either go into a coughing fit or blow out every last molecule of air in your lungs. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> The machine measures volume and rates and creates a graph which gives the doc a visual of our breathing capacity. I'm not quite sure how to interpret the graph though. ~Juliet
