Vomitting blood

Hey there, had a rough weekend,
Ainsley seemed fine thursday afternoon besides a mild cough that she had picked up from her brother, so I left for some me time. When I got home, her dad said she had been grumpy while I was away. Within 15 minutes of sitting down, I heard crying and ran to her bedroon to find her covered in vomit. This was at 10:00, she continued vomitting every 5 - 10 minutes until at 1:00 am whenthere were blood streaks appearing in her vomit so we ran the ER. On the trip over she developped a high fever and continued to vomit.
We ended up staying in the ER till 7 the next morning, they did an x-ray, urine culture and tylenol suppositories. They didn't let us leave till the fever came down and she could keep a cup of juice down (which she vomitted upon walking to the car). The next day continued with fever and severe diahhrea, but at least she could keep down gatorade.
I feel frustrated because nobody had answers for me, we couldn't see any specialists because it was the middle of the night, and they just summed it up to a nasty virus.
I agree with the virus diagnosis, but for a CF child is this not more serious? She lost 4 lbs within 2 days and everybody says that I should just treat her as a normal child. Her vomit was like glue and she was choking to just get it out, I felt so bad for her and helpless.
I wonder what the future holds because we've been cruising along for quite some time now with no problems and then, wham, within hours she goes from fine to desperately sick. Everybody asks if she is a "mild case" because she always seems so healthy and vibrant, you wouldn't know that anything was wrong.
It's times like this, reality hits you like a mac truck in the face.

I am so sorry to hear that she is sick! It is hard when they are little and cannot really tell you exactly the way they are feeling. They just don't have the vocabulary to express themselves.

It does sound like she has a nasty virus. I do know I worry a lot about those type of things because of our kids having CF. I worry that it could be something more serious also. I would follow up with her CF clinic today and let them know what is going on.

My Hannah was sick a week ago, throwing up and screaming that her tummy hurt. I was worried because we had been in Mexico, so it could had been a lot of things, or it could be nothing serious. Wasn't sure. Thursday night it got bad, so I took her to the ER, and they dx her with a urinary tract infection. I had no idea that you could throw up with those infections, or that they were so painful. Now, after a few days on antibiotics, she is 100% better. I felt like I was overreacting while in the ER, and kept telling the nurses and doctors that I just worry about the things it COULD be b/c of the CF. Kind of silly that I felt like I had to make excuses for bringing my sick child to the ER. Hannah also lost 4 lbs while she was sick, but has alreay gained 2 back<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I understand about the reality of the disease whenever my girls are sick. But sometimes it is just a virus thing, and not much to do with CF. We CF parents just get really worried, with good cause. I hope she is feeling better soon!

Why is it we feel guilty about bring our sick kids to the ER? I too always question whether or not I should go and the whole time I'm there wonder if we really should be.

I don't know why we feel that way either. When Kayla was first dx, we spent many nights in the ER. And I used to get frustrated with how crowded it was because many people without insurance would use the ER at the Children's Hospital in place of a normal doctor visit since they would not be turned away due to not being able to pay. So every little sniffle, ear ache, pink eye, etc etc was in the ER while my daughter's lower colon was hanging out of her rectum due to rectal prolapses. I used to get so mad that I would have to wait for so long. I feel bad that I used to feel that way, but I did. I wasn't very patient I guess, and a little self centered in the fact that my daughter needed help more quickly.

So maybe now I think, could I had waited until tomorrow for this and gone to the pediatrican? Am I one of those people I used to complain about years earlier in the Childrens Hospital ER?

I am glad to hear that I am not the only one who feels this way though. How is your daughter doing?

Sorry to hear that your little one had such a rough weekend. My daughter had a similar virus in Feb. She started immediately vomiting blood. So we spent one night in the ER, sent home, then back again the next night because she couldn't hold anything down. She was kept in the hospital for quite a bit longer than the average patient without cf I was told by the nurses. They just wanted to make sure she was on IV's and monitored before they released her. She lost two pounds and it was the week before she was to get a g-tube, so those two pounds were a lot. It did take a few weeks for her to gain back all of the weight. My son caught the virus from her but his virus did not last very long and he was back to normal pretty quickly.

I think for us parents even the not-related-to-CF stuff is cause for panic. I'm so calm with my boys -- its the CF tag that makes it all the worry multiply. My daughter had a stomach bug over a month ago and her issue was she got dehydrated really quick. So the pedi sent us to the ER. But having CF on her file meant the CF team was immediately contacted and they took over her care, insisting on a stomach and chest x-ray (to rule out bowel obstruction, I guess). The x-ray showed some CF bug or something, so we wound up on IV antibiotics even though we went in for a stomach flu, so have CF does mean its worse on some level. They dehydrate quicker. They could have CF related issues. Hang in there, its not easy at all!!

So sorry to hear about your pain. I wish I had answers.... this can be such a difficult disease.

Makes you wonder why parents with CF would voluntarily have another child knowing that CF is a possibility? Blows my mind....

Take care.
