it is a very common drug to treat staph but i guess you don't see it mentionned often b/c many people are allergic to it (my dd is). we use bactrim or rifadine+fucidine when we suspected allergies to Bactrim

i did not notice exacerbation of symptoms, but keeping my dd's diet on the alkaline side and giving her lemon water to drink frequently seemed to lessen the congestion.

my understanding is that they do it when you are not responding to meds you are on and they suspect you might have a bug hiding down there that diid not show up in the sample you coughed up. so i guess they do a bronchoscopy to get a closer look and get a better sample.
