Pulmozyme &/or Hypertonic Saline at 6months

Our doctor reports that HTS is great for helping clear mucus but can paralyze bronchial cillia, so until there is a clear need for it he doesn't want our child on it. He also didn't want her on Pulmozyme, but we overrode him on this and she's been on it since about 1-year. Anna's never had any...

Advice for a mom that will have a child with CF

Mine is 3 next month. She gets drugs. She gets treatments. She eats 5 times a day instead of 3 like her cousins. But mostly, she's a kid like any other. She spends most of her time playing and learning and running and screaming and most people who aren't with her in the morning or at night...

    4 Minute Mile....anyone?

A four minute mile is an olympic level feat for men, and would be about 13 seconds faster than the current women's world record. For a female, with or without CF, a 5 minute mile is actually a very impressive feat, and a 4:30 would be considered approaching world class. How fast do you run a...

Rhodotorula culture and "many respiratory flora" in sputum

Rhodotorula culture and Just to follow up for anyone down the road who sees this thread, my wife called the doctor and asked about these results, and was told that they were "insignificant." Thanks for calming us down in the meantime. Pete (and his wife were freaking out for a little while)

    Scared to get son tested

You mentioned that he was tested as a newborn and tested negative. Do you happen to know what type of test was used? If it was a simple sweat test, those are notoriously inaccurate in newborns, and you should try again. If however he was subjected to a blood screening or a genetic analysis...

Rhodotorula culture and "many respiratory flora" in sputum

Thanks for your comments. I suspected that the "many flora" would be more clearly delineated if it was of concern, but I am by no means an expert yet, as my Anna is approaching 2 years old and this is only our second "culture scare." My wife has been very anxious since she looked up the...

Rhodotorula culture and "many respiratory flora" in sputum

We just got our culture results online from a recent visit to the CF doctor. As it is Christmas Eve, we're not going to get to talk to his office until Monday. Can anybody tell me what Rhodotorula means to a CF patient? Also, our previous cultures have occasionally referred to "respiratory...

    Pseudomonas?

OK, I got some answers from the doctor (on a Saturday!). Non-encapsulated is apparently the same thing as non-mucoid. The strain is sensitive to most medications, so we're optimistic. Thanks for answering Ratatosk, you were right on the spot! Pete (is feeling a lot better today)
