1 mo old, just started enzymes

My 1 mo old daughter was just diagnosed and we just started enzymes and vitamins yesterday. She acts like she has a tummy ache and has been very fussy since we started the meds. Called the doctor today and they said to stop the vitamins and continue the enzymes. However when I read on the pharmacy packages it says the vitamins have no side effects and the enzymes can cause bloating, stomachache, cramping...etc. Does anyone know anything about this, or if it just takes them awhile to get adjusted to the new stuff in their belly?

DS was put on enzymes at about two weeks, when he was finally able to eat after recovering from bowel surgery. Thru out his infancy we were always trying to figure out the number of enzymes. He tended to be gassy, though based on output really probably needed MORE enzymes, but every time we'd adjust by half a capsule he'd get fussy. He was also on zantac for reflux. How are his stools? Are they very firm, too lose, oily/shiny?

My 3 week old is on both enzymes and vitamins but was extremely gassy prior to starting either supplement. I'm curious as to why your doctor told you to stop the vitamins when they are essential for proper nutrition....CF individuals have fat absorption issues thus the fat soluble vitamins (i.e., ADEK) are necessary to receive via supplementation. If proper nutrition is key in managing CF, I would definitely question stopping the vitamins. Perhaps your doctor could recommend simethecone drops or other product for gas (if that's even the issue)? I know that my daughter was sensitive to the vitamins initially as they caused her to vomit. We are giving her "Vita Drops" made by Major Pharmaceuticals. Perhaps you could try an alternate vitamin supplement?

Our experience was that our daughter had stomachaches, cramping, etc. without enzymes. Once she started them it was like someone flipped a switch and she had immediate relief. She is also on Prevacid, which makes a HUGE difference for her in helping the enzymes do their job.

Are they sure she is pancreatic insufficient? (Sometimes PI can develop later). What were her GI symptoms before? I'm not a doc of course I'm just curious and trying to help you think this out. Reflux could possibly be an issure for your daughter, but it doesn't necessarily make sense if the fussiness didn't start until she started enzymes.

I agree the vitamins are SUPER important and would question stopping them. Perhaps different product and/or dosing at a different time?
