I am going throught the same thing with my 18 month old except she has not been admitted to the hospital and so far they have only done blood work. No genetics and no sweat test as of yet. My daughter has the same symptoms as your niece. Plus my daughter has some issues with constant runny nose and cough also. Please keep us updated on diagnosis.
