10K in New York, 2012

My sisters and I want to do a CF 10k in New York that's in July; it's the 2nd annual Boomer's CF Run to Breath. I've done a 5k before, but didn't run it straight, and my mile time is pretty sucky (like 11:30!), but it's definatly a goal of mine. My oldest sister has already been running 6 miles regularly for a few months, so she's totally gonna kill me!
I just wanted to get the news out there about the race. I'm definatly looking forward to meeting some other CFers, running my butt off, and proving I can do it <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
Happy Training!

Hi,
My brother with CF ran this 10K last year, and then ran the NYC marathon with Team Boomer in November. When he first set the goal and started training, he couldn't even run a full mile. His FEV1 went up several points after he started training.
You can read about his training on his blog at kevinrunning.wordpress.com
Good luck with your goal. Make sure you're eating plenty of calories to avoid losing too much weight while you're training.

I ran in this race last year! It was very hot! There are a lot of people who run in the race. You should do it, it is a big accomplishment to say you have completed a 10k.

I say congrats! =) Just getting out there and doing it is more than many people would try. Make sure you drink plenty of water/sports drink while doing the run, if it is as hot as Sabrina77 says. The key is to take your time and find a pace that feels good to you. Then make it a point to stop at every water station to at least take a small sip. Don't gulp down the whole glass unless you REALLY need it because if you do you will most likely cramp. It is also easier to drink from the cup if you squeeze the top before you drink, it acts like a funnel and directs it straight to your mouth. Small drinks throughout the whole race should prevent you from cramping and keep you hydrated. If given the option of water or sports drink grab both and drink a little of the sports drink followed by the water. As you know water sometimes is just not enough for us. The sports drink will help replenish some of what you lost during the race.
Good Luck and let me know if you need any more advice, also let us all know how it goes.
