My 8 month old was diagnosed with cf at birth. He had a very tough start . He was in hospital for the first 4 months of his life with complications of the bowels. Well now that he has been home for 4 months, he has now developed his first cold. what do we do? As I'm a new mom to begin with it's hard to know what to do with a child without CF, now I'm really lost as to what I'm suppose to do with CF thrown into the mix! Can anyone share what they did with there children? My little guy right now just seems to have the sinus part of the cold runny nose and sounds hard for him to breath when he sleeps ( alot of snoring).

Thanks for any insight anyone can give <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0">)

DS had similar issues when he was that age. First year seemed like he had one constant sinus/head cold thing going on.

I'd steam up the bathroom in the morning and then give him a bath to get things moving. Would do it again before bed. We also used saline nasal spray (simply saline) and the dreaded bulb syringe to suck out the boogies. He hated it. The reason we used the aerosol nasal spray was because regular saline spray would cause a suction issue and boogies would get sucked back up into the bottle.

We also would increase his Chest Physiotherapy from 3 times a day to 4 to keep things moving in his chest.

I remember the first head cold and was terrified it would turn into something worse. But I also felt so relieved and confident afterwards that we got thru that milestone unscathed. DS is battling a head cold right now and some of those same fears come rushing back. Yesterday he had a bit of a cough, so I was in PANIC mode. But later in the evening after his beatment, he seemed fine. Skipped his sinus rinse last night 'cuz he was tired, and I was "rewarded" with his snoring in my ear -- he sleeps with us from time to time. Sigh!

Increase chest pt, suction any site of mucus in the nose, apply saline into the nostrils every few hours and suction.

Ditto to the above posters.

My daughter was not diagnosed until 18 months of age, so our first year was crazy and we did not know about CF.
We used to call her Boogs, because of all the mucus in her nose. Gross...I know.

1. Steamy showers are great.
2. Saline spray as much as needed worked.
3. I would also increase CPT as well.
4. Suction the mucus out with those bulbs...make sure to clean them very well in between though!

Good luck and try not to worry!
