Hello, I have a 2 yr. old nephew that is going to be tested for CF next week. I have been looking up information regarding this, which has been somewhat helpful. My main concern is if he is diagnosed with CF at such a young age, will his outlook be better for chance of survival. I have noticed most ages of expectancy are in the 30's, with some being earlier or later than that. Seth is such a big part of our lives, and I want to prepare myself if this is what he has. I want to be there for emotional support for my sister and to help her in any way I can. I know I'm putting the "cart before the horse" but I'm worried that this is what he has. Thank you for any input you can give.

Dear Concerned Aunt,First of all, it sounds like they are very lucky to have you in their lives! Your support is very important if this is, in fact, CF. Also, your knowledge of CF will also help tremendously! It's really hard to determine how well someone with CF will do, unfortunately, but with treatments today (and yet to come), our kids have such a wonderful chance of leading fairly normal lives, and, God willing, may even see a cure. Please stay positive and I will be praying for Seth, you, and your family. If you, or anyone in your family would like to talk, please feel free to contact me (augustmoon0003@aol.com)

I am hoping along with you that Seth does not have CF. But if he does, the earlier he gets diagnosed, the better-- the sooner he gets treatment, the quicker he will begin to thrive, and the less lung damage will be done. It's very hard to predict how long a person w/ CF will live, or the severity of the CF right at diagnosis, but there have been many new treatments and leaps in research in my lifetime; today really is the best time ever to be born with CF. I'll be keeping you, your sister and nephew in my thoughts.

Just wanted to say that I too hope that your nephew comes up with a negative diagnosis of CF....but if he does, he is lucky to be born it todays society where so much research and new meds are coming about every day. I wanted to give you some hope as well...I am 30..will be 31 in July and doing good lung wise. Right now, I have more digestive involvement going on...as a child it was my lungs....is strange. I am married, have a wonderful daughter who is 6 and CF free and I work full time as well. I have always lived a normal life. I got to to do the same things that all the other kids were doing...although I spent more time in the hospital than they did. Your sister is definitely lucky to have you in her life. Good luck...my thoughts and prayers are with you all! Keep us updated!Dea
