2 yr old not eating

I am struggling with our son (almost 3) right now as well. Since the warm weather hit, he is a bear when it comes to eating. Hardly any breakfast, pretty okay lunch, too busy for snacks (though I force it), dinner is the easiest. All of them are one cheek on the chair one off and ready to go back outside.

So, I am now trying to get some power packed stuff that is quick and easy, but it is frustrating. I am following him around the yard like a crazy person to get him to finish things. Not to mention my renditions of Bob the Builder machines to get him to finish my high cal concoctions!! (he loves when I do Dizzy and spin his cup)Man, does it get old some days. I am squeezing MCT oil on everything.

More than anything it just really messes with your mind. We just came from a clinic visit and they seem to think our last visit's weight jump was incorrect since he went back down to the curve he had been on before (between the 40-50%). Last time we were there they were amazed at the jump so they said back off the extra stuff...now I am to go back to what I was doing before! Arggh...suddenly I've gone from him looking chubby to him seeming thinner just because of a stupid clinic visit (all in my mind of course). I am going to let it go, do my best and try to accept it is just him being a toddler. With my older one I wouldn't have even batted an eyelash at this behavior but with CF it is so much a part of our mothering.

Just know you are not alone and you are still doing a great job even if she goes through normal toddler eating stuff. He will be 3 in 2 weeks and just recently lost his buddha belly if that makes you feel better...I know is just his body changing and lengthening but it still messes with ya'!

I don't know if your little girl is on the enzymes ultrase, but my 2 year old is. The nutritionist at the cf clinic gave me a form to fill out for a nutrition drink that you mix with milk. You have to send the receipts from the ultrase and this company will send you a certain amount of this drink. It has a lot of calories and I guess a lot of kids and adults with cf us this. You can start getting this at the age of 2. If you see the nutritionist when you have your check-up next week, ask about it. If not, ask the doc. I'm sure someone knows about it. I still have to fill my form out, we just went to the cf clinic last month and I need to refill the ultrase and get my receipt. I'm not in a hurry because fortunately my little guy eats pretty well. I see a little bit of a difference since he turned two, but not much. I'm sure it will get worse as he gets older. Good luck! Let me know how you make out. I know how frustrating it can be worrying about their weight and trying to keep them at or above the 5oth percentile. Take care

I'm in the same boat with my 2 year old. Besides the fact that he's super picky, he's too busy to be bothered to sit down and eat. He also eats about half of what we give him. Our clinic gave us scandishakes, which he hates, so I poured the powder out into a ziploc container and I add a scoop of powder to each glass of milk. I guess it's enough that he doesn't taste it.

My son's nutritionist has told us to just feed him what we know he'll eat, even if it's over and over and over. We cut back on snacks to make sure he's hungry for meals. We now give him his snacks as soon as he's done eating his meal. No juice or milk a couple of hours before a meal. My son LOVES cereal with milk, so every night before bed he has a fourth meal of a big bowl of milk and cereal. We make shakes in the blender with milk, cream, chocolate syrup, ice cream, and a few scoops of scandishake. And of course, add butter or cheese to everything we can. His nutritionist has us add a can of evaporated milk to a gallon of whole milk to add some calories.

I think it's normal for weight gain to slow down around this age. They kind of lose that chubby baby look, and start to look like a big kid.

One of our doctors just tells us to feed DS what he'll eat. Lately his bedtime snack consists of dry roasted peanuts. I buy them at the wholesale club. Some days he eats hot dogs or buttered noodles for every meal. At preschool they give him a spoonful of peanut butter for dessert. We just try to sneak stuff in and let him snack. This weekend he woke up from a nap and demanded raspberries. Proceeded to eat a HUGE bowl of frozen mixed berries. Figure if he asks for something -- within reason, may as well give it to him -- body must be telling him he needs it.

Another one of his CF doctors has expressed concern with the possibility of DS gaining too much weight because we use cream and whole milk; however, he's never gotten above the 75th percentile -- is usually 50-70%. Way I look at it, we try to keep a good layer of fat on him -- insurance in case he does get into a picky mood or gets sick.

Last clinic appointment the other doctor was thrilled that DS had a "good layer of fat on him".
