Can Anyone give me some tips on getting through High school?

People tend to treat you the way you present yourself. I am not sure where you live, but IF you are truly doing what you are suppose to in school & still getting crap from the school then something is wrong. IMHO you are not doing as much as you are suppose to & the occaisonal missing of meds is more then what you want us to think. Maybe to you its not a big deal, but I bet that its a big part of the problem. Not knowing you or your situation I cant say this for sure, but I was a teenager once & know how teens look at things. Be true to yourself & the rest will follow....

Hey Jimmy my name is christina and I'm in my last year of high school. I know its hard when you are sick and miss school, also to see the doctors. But you just have to sit down and make a plan, on how you are going to take care of yourself. I come home do my homework and treatments at the same time. I make sure I take my pills before eating. Also when I know I'm going to be sick or if I'm going to the doctors for the day. I go to my teachers the day before and tell them I'm not going to be here, can I please have the work. Make your plans with your friends after your treatments. Also if people ask you, just say "Hey this what i have so what, its not a big deal" Thats what i tell people, and if they look at me wierd, then they have a problem. I hope this helps you. high School is not that bad. Oh if your friends are giving you crap then their not really your friends. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Im in my first year of college, and after goin through high school I realize it was the best time of my life along with the worst time of my life. High School can be dreadfull, you have been goin to school 5 days a week your whole life, and its starting to get old...basically my advice to you, is to become responcible about takin ur meds, and accept who you are (because if you don't accept yourself, then why do you expect others to accept you.) High School will be over before you know it, have some fun, and find some friends that will treat you with respect. High School can be really stressfull, just do your best, and don't let things get to ya. Hang in there Jimmy!

Hey Jimmy,

My son Josh is also 10th grade. He is having an ok year this year but his last 3 really sucked. He was sick and in the hospital in 7th grade for a month and in 8th grade twice and in 9th grade he was out of school from April and never went back. Its is so hard for him to make up work. He thinks that its hard enough to be sick, you shouldn't have to make up the work too. He doesn't have a girlfriend either- he's too short and little.

I'm a mom of 2 CF kids but I'm also a teacher. Your parents can get you on a 504 accomodation plan at school. This means that since you have CF, you are entitled to have things changed around at school to help you do your best. Here's some examples:

-Josh gets a set of books to keep at home in case he's sick or if he doesn't feel like luggin all of them around.

-He doesn't get tardy points when he's late because he has to do so much stuff before school.

-When he is out sick he only has to make up the REALLY important work, not stupid suff like daily work sheets.

If you are interested, I can send you the whole list.

There are two sides to having a 504 plan though. Ya, you get out of doing some stuff, BUT your teachers have to meet to talk about you and that you have CF. That bothered JOsh at first, but he got over it. He didn't want to go to his meeting so his dad and I went by ourselves.

Let me know if I can tell you any more stuff. Josh doesn't come on this site, but if you want, I can have him email you.

I'm going to give advice, which I clearly didn't follow until later in life, but wish I would have earlier. Be honest, with all who you feel comfortable with about your CF. Teachers tend to be much more understanding if they know why you are absent. Be honest with friends too (although it sounds like many of your friends know of your CF?). This helps develop friendships, because if you are holding back a part of yourself, then a friendship can only go so far. My friendships blossomed once everyone knew that I had CF.

As far as school work goes...you are going to be more tired than your peers. You are going to have less time for school work and fun than your peers becuase a lot of your time is being eaten up by being sick and/or simply maintaining your health on a regular basis. this is where you have to be strong. stay on top of your work (I usually worked ahead of the syllabus in college just in case!) and keep your teachers updated on how you are feeling. make sure to fit in time with your friends too. It is the memories of the good times with your friends and family that will help yo get through the rough patches of life.

The girlfriend thing will come along. don't worry about that! the more the think about it and stress about it the more you will become consumed with it. If you like a girl, go talk to her. Be as social and as outgoing as you can. Someone will end up liking you for your charming personality.

I don't know if that helps at all, but I hope it did. Hang in there! Get through high school so you can go to college. Those are really the 4 best years of life.
