Can Anyone give me some tips on getting through High school?

I'm going to give advice, which I clearly didn't follow until later in life, but wish I would have earlier. Be honest, with all who you feel comfortable with about your CF. Teachers tend to be much more understanding if they know why you are absent. Be honest with friends too (although it sounds like many of your friends know of your CF?). This helps develop friendships, because if you are holding back a part of yourself, then a friendship can only go so far. My friendships blossomed once everyone knew that I had CF.

As far as school work goes...you are going to be more tired than your peers. You are going to have less time for school work and fun than your peers becuase a lot of your time is being eaten up by being sick and/or simply maintaining your health on a regular basis. this is where you have to be strong. stay on top of your work (I usually worked ahead of the syllabus in college just in case!) and keep your teachers updated on how you are feeling. make sure to fit in time with your friends too. It is the memories of the good times with your friends and family that will help yo get through the rough patches of life.

The girlfriend thing will come along. don't worry about that! the more the think about it and stress about it the more you will become consumed with it. If you like a girl, go talk to her. Be as social and as outgoing as you can. Someone will end up liking you for your charming personality.

I don't know if that helps at all, but I hope it did. Hang in there! Get through high school so you can go to college. Those are really the 4 best years of life.

Hey Jimmy,

There unfortunately is no absolute right advice to give for surviving high school. Somehow we just do - some of us have harder times than others.

I will say some of the things I thought of as I read your post. One - do your teachers KNOW you have CF? If so do they know what it is? If they don't know - I would tell them and if they know but aren't really aware of what it involves then I would get info from your docs office and take it to them. Teachers are used to kids taking shortcuts in high school, so if they don't know what is going on and just see you skimping on work and not showing up for class they may be looking at you like most every other kid in school that is trying to find the easy way out. That is just my thought on that.

As for the girlfriend issue. Boyfriends and Girlfriends are so extremely overrated in high school. It is nice to have someone to go to school dances with, but other than that it is so much more fun to be free of that obligation. I wanted to date so badly all through school. All my friends started dating really early - then there was me. I never understood why no one was interested in me and thought something must be wrong with me. Then I finally got a date at the end of my Junior year - literally the last week of school. I ended up dating that guy for just under a year. I was so much happier and had much more fun once we broke up. I also started using this - before I was able to drive - when people emphasized the importance of dating .... what is the point of dating if YOU can't drive and you have to have your parents take you places - talk about no fun. I say with the dating thing just try to be happy being on your own and people may see that and say ... hmmm I like that and want you in their lives. When people see someone that is seemingly "unavailable" sometimes their interests are peaked.

Also with the meds, I had a hard time doing things as I was supposed to in school. One thing I ALWAYS forgot was my enzymes - how I don't know but I did. I say do everything you can to remember your meds. Get a dry erase board and write them all down and mentally check them off everyday. That is what I have to do otherwise I can't remember what I have taken and what I haven't. It is a pain and a hassle - especially when you feel you have more important things to do - but just remember you are NOT able to do those more important things if you are sick from not doing your meds.

Take Care and Happy Holidays,
Lindsey

Hey i can't help you with the women, i'm not having much luck with that myself, but as for the teachers giving you crap about being absent I think i can help. I don't know if this is a national thing or if it is just a texas thing (where i live) there is a thing called a 504C plan that you can get for schools, only public schools, private doesn't count. It is a legal paper that basically says, "hey, i'm sick sometimes and miss school and will probably get behind on my work, but the teachers can't be a pain in the @$$ about it and have to let me make up the work within reason" Talk with your school counsoler and your parents about it, when my parents set one up for me i thought that they were just making excuses for me but later i realized that when i get sick i can't remember anything so if i'm at school it doesn't do much good because i can't remember it. The teachers hate having to deal with 504c plans because they have to make exceptions to the rules but it is a good thing to have incase you have things get all screwed up and your grades start slipping. Talk with your teachers and explain what is going on and it can help a lot by just going in before/after class and just explain why you aren't there a lot and why you keep getting behind, if that doesn't work get a 504c plan because they have to work by law. Teacher are in the business because they want to, teachers are smart people that are there because they want to be, they want to teach and most of the time they will work with a student to keep them cought up with the class. Teachers act all mean and tough but most of the time they just want what is best for their students and in your case being absent and getting to feel better and getting your work done takes the back seat. teachers will understand this if you explain it to them. I hope you get this resolved and feel better so you can be in school more. Good luck and best wishes

Can Anyone give me some tips on getting through High school?

Hey, Im about two yrs into College. I definitely remember HS though, and it was particularly tough for me. I missed like three months my soph yr and then about 2 weeks my jr yr and prob a month my sr yr. So I definitely missed a ton of school throughout hs. I do have a few pointers that could help.
1. If you dont carry all your meds with you, including you Pacrease or whatever you take when you eat. You can get a special note written from your dr to your principle to carry it. They might give you a hard time at first, but you CAN carry it if you talk to the right people. I didnt like having to go to the nurses office before or after lunch. I liked being able to blend in.
2. Definitely tell your teachers about your situation! I usually waited till the first time I got sick. I explained everything to them and they ended up being really helpful when I needed to make things up. I sometimes had a hard time making up all my work and wouldnt finish till the end of the sem. It IS really difficult doing twice as much and esp in things like Math (my weakness) where you needed to know what you missed before you could understand what you were currently learning. I would go in for help after school or during lunch or study breaks, they sort of tutored me privately.
3. As for relationships. I never did have a boyfriend in H.S. I only told my close friends about my CF. I was scared it would scare people off, but I have gotten more open now and I realize, if someone is really potentially a boyfriend, or girlfriend in your case, then CF wont matter. None of the people who I've told have treated me differently. They will ask me how I am feeling every now and then, how my CF is doing...its almost worked as a screening device. You will find someone. I wouldnt worry much now!
