2nd hand smoke in Las Vegas?

Hi!

Sounds like fun! We were married in Vegas 6 years ago and now LIVE in Vegas. So, I wanted to answer your questions. First, they recently passed a law that there is NO smoking anywhere children are allowed... For example, the airport is completely smoke free (when you step outside the doors, however, its pretty bad with everyone and their mother lighting up), restaurants are all smoke free (including the ones immediately off of the casino floor, but the smoke still wafts over, so its not very helpful there), shopping malls and corridors of all hotels are also smoke free. For example, you used to be able to walk anywhere in casinos and smoke (i.e. the forum shops at caesar's palace, hallways and near elevators, etc), but now the ONLY places in casinos you are legally able to light up are on the casino floor (no children allowed) and in bars that don't serve food (unless they have a seperated area for smoking). So, that is the new law. That being said, there are still people who ignore it and there isn't a whole lot done about it. But, the air in the malls, restaurants, etc. is considerably cleaner smelling (IMO) than it used to be.

I would say the airport is the cleanest of all with NO traces of smoke indoors. However, as I do, you (I travel in and out of McCarren a lot), you may want to put a cloth or mask over your face once you're outside. If the smoke doesn't get you, the exhaust fumes will. Urgh.

I would avoid the casino floor, but like someone mentioned the point is to MAKE people walk through the casino and be transfixed by the flashing lights and loud noises, so it is virtually impossible to completely avoid. I always bring something like a sweater or something to breath through when I have to walk through the casino. A mask is also a good option. We have seen people wearing masks on occasion, so its not that strange. You certainly could have the taxi, etc. drop you off somewhere near your room elevators (there are usually several doors to the casinos) so you can avoid unneccessary trips thorugh the casino.

I personally never go to the casinos with visitors cause the smoke is just too much, but I have gone through them quickly when our friends have gotten married or we're meeting someone at a restaurant in a hotel. Its not too bad if you put something over your mouth, but I don't care what anyone says, no matter how "good" you ventilate these casinos, it is still like breathing toxic waste and painful to my lungs.

So, my suggestion is to be proactive and take precautions to protect your lungs, but at the same time, I wouldn't avoid the wedding if you want to go.... Have fun!!!

I went to the Mirage two years ago when I was very sick. I did not notice the smoke at all. Yes, you had to walk through the casino but I walked on the outside and really didn't have a problem with the smoke. I had more of a problem with how far it was to get to the actual room from the lobby.

I went a few years ago and I just remember a lot of the ritzy type hotels/casinos had pretty good air ventilation. I was surprised. But overall, it's tough to get away from the smokers in the off-ventilated areas. Nasty!
