Ok so my baby girl has not yet been diagnosed, but the Drs are more than sure she has CF. She was born at 35 weeks because of a intestinal malrotation w/ volvulus. Long story short she was in the hospital for 2 1/2 months. Now they have put her on Creon 6000 units and AquaDeks, to try to get her to gain weight. She started this just Wed, my question is what should her poops start to look like if the stuff is working and how long should it take to start working? We are all really conserned that she only weighs a lil over 7lbs at 3months.

What were her stools looking like before she started the Creon? That is an important factor to consider in looking for changes now that she is on Creon.

If she had greasy stools before- oil separating from the rest of what is in her diaper, a shiny/greasy look or feel to the poop you should see a decrease in this. If stools were very, very frequent you may see a decrease in this- hard to tell, since babies can have several a day and still be 'normal' esp if breastfed. If they were very loose, they may firm up some- again, you don't want hard stools, but you should see an improvement in appearance.

The most important thing you will be looking for is GROWTH. Some babies will rarely have what looks like 'normal' poop, but when started on enzyme therapy, it's clear it's working because they start to grow and if they've been having belly aches, gas, etc these symptoms improve. Within a few weeks you should start seeing gain- the dr should be having her in for regular weight checks to monitor for this. Wishing the very best!

What testing has she had at this point? They will generally order a sweat test, genetic testing and look for results of her newborn screening. I hope she has a definitive dx soon so you can get her the care she needs at an accredited CF center.

Well her poops have always been kinda diarreaha looking, right now they really havent changed much just now they look oily. She does have 26 cm of her small intestine removed so that makes a big difference. We are currently seeing CF specialists, because me and my husband are both carriers and her newborn screen came back positive along with all the other medical issues she has. The AquaDeks shes on seems to make her extremely upset, but the Dr arent conserned, ugh this is all so frustrating!

For comparison sake my Non-CF 35 weaker weighed 10 lbs 7 oz at 3 months and she was 5 lbs 10 oz at birth. She was exclusively breast fed. She is 9 now and in the 10th percentile for height and weight. My 11 year old who is in the diagnostic process for CF weighed 10 lbs 13 oz at 3 months which was the 40-50%tile and she was 5 lbs 8 oz at birth. She was on Neosure which I believe was a high calorie preemie formula for the first 6 months of her life. As soon as she weaned off the bottle around 13 months she fell off of the growth chart and now at 11 she is 52 inches and 52 lbs on many supplements and I believe she is in the 3rd percentile or at least was until her last illness when she lost more weight. Best wishes.

Hi- my sons was dx at 42 days old and his poop was alot like hers after taking the creon the poop firmed up but has always been stringy, Sorry, I know that sounds gross but it is what  it is. You will definetly see a difference if it is working. He would and still does spit up the Aqueks and he is two now I mix it in his milk and he doesn't even know it's there, but his Dr keep telling me to try to get him to take it in less milk because some of this levels are borderline. As to her weight my son has always been at nutritional risk until he turned one and we switched to boost 1.5 (in WV wic supplies this) or pedisure. We tried lots of supplements in his formula like MCT oil and polycose(spelling?) and they worked to some extent so maybe ask about them. Hang in there it does get alittle easier!!<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">
