ok, so i saw a show a while back that mentioned the gene pheremone theory (the science of sex or the science of beauty, can't recall which one). my take on this was that the response was rather weak and is easily superceded by things like physical or emotional attraction.
it is difficult to discern how sophisticated this mechanism is. can it decode our entire genome or does it look for specifics? the show i saw suggested that only certain information is carried by these pheremones; info like immunities, allergies, etc.
i'm not quite convince that this pheremone will carry information about a specific non-functioning protein, unless, of course, this protien somehow effects the production, transmission, or reception of said pheremone.
that said, i truly belive that my persistent cough and patheticly twiggy build trigger more suspicion that something might be right with this guy than any pheremone i might give off. some people are hopelessly attracted to the weak and needy, some are suckers for pretty faces, still others are drawn to unconventional looks. only the shallowest beings would let their attraction be based solely on first impressions, the place where this pheremone effect would be at its most powerful. no doubt this does occur, but, luckily for us, the world isn't filled with shallow people.
