I had one, all five years I worked full time. At the time I was married and figured the money would go to my husband. Now that I have kids, maybe it will go to them. (but right now my husband is the beneficiary) I contributed 10% and my employer matched some of that. I say go for it because you never know how long you're going to be around and it might benefit you, personally, someday. Anytime you can put away pre-tax dollars it's always in your favor. Some people say, "well, I'll just save the money somewhere else on my own" but I'm a firm believer in you won't miss what you never had. You never see the money in your checking account, it's like it was never there. For me, it's the easiest way to save. I hope your employer is matching some of it, that makes it even more beneficial.

I always max out the 401K to the amount the employer will match. Free money is free money (whether it's for me or my heirs). I don't put any more than what they will be matching b/c generally they are with one investment co. and do not offer the flexibility I want in investing so I have a Roth for any additional money I want to put away for long term. I also have a Traditional because I rolled over a 401K from a previous employer into it. You can't rollover into a Roth. And my CFP (my dad :) doesn't suggest rolling over a 401 into a 401 because of the lack of flexibility concern.

Investing for retirement gives me hope that I will live to enjoy it.

Investing for retirement in my 401K, ROth and Traditional makes me feel like I'm beating cf. If I can die rich, I feel in a certain way I've won.

...but then again I've always been a saver....ever since my first bank account depositing babysitting $, scruncie sale and lemonade stand profits. At 15 1/2 I bought my first car with the majority of my savings...$3,800.

Ya i wondered this too. But as everyone said, it's free money. so i contribute up to the matching amount as well.

You can use the money as a loan if you're ever in trouble ( i wouldn't recommend it but as a last resort, at least it's better than nothing) and you can use it as a down payment on a 1st house.

but it's hard if you have lots of medical expenses, so i wouldn't feel bad if you can't afford to contribute. it's a pretty individual thing.

if i die and i don't use it, it's going to CF. hopefully it will help those after me.... <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> and that makes me happy
