504 Help

My son has an IEP, not a 504 but it's sort of the same concept. They just gave me a form to have his doctor fill out and I hand delivered it to the doctor and told him what I wanted him to put on it. The school does not have access to anything more than that one form, it's not like they can call the doctor up to ask him anymore questions unless I approve it.

My son just started kindergarten. We did have a 504 plan put in place, the school did not need or request access to medical records. They just need documentation from the Drs. I would contact the Social Worker at the CF clinic for assistance. That is who helped us, our school orginally told us that our son was not sick enough. Good Luck !!

No, our school never had to have access to our records. I would never allow that (I don't even think its legal). Jenn gave good advice, ask the clinic social worker or a nurse to call the school.

Tonya, go to your state web site. It should have something on 504 plans. This is a civil rights document to protect students right to an education. Any school receiving federal financial assistance must provide a student with one. It does not give them the right to the information in their medical records or does it give them the right to question the doctor. The HEPA law protects that information. I hope this helps.
