7% saline

The Isisis study was for the hypertonic saline (7%) vs. 0.9% for newborns up to. 16 months. They have done the same clinical trials for adults and children. When my daughter finished up the study last week we were informed that we might not be able to get the 7% anymore. The company isnt making any money ( pari) there is an appeal going on rigjt now amd the decision will be made in a couple of weeks. In the last couple of days of her being on it I have been impressed. there is nothing that sick kids can do and there us no other company in Canada that makes it. I have 4 other refills (12 boxes) that I could fill if it is discontinued but I want to figure something out for back.up. The only one I could find on amazon was 0.9.

<P>did you talk to your dr. about switching to 5%..?  studies i found if they used 5% inhaled 5 ml twice a day or once a day and if on 7% inhaled 4ml twice or once a day and both got good results..that was an adult study....sick kids will have the 5%.....very cheap....and or st.mikes.....she may even get same result on 5% and save 200 a month....i know money isnt as important as health....but see what your dr. thinks about your lil one inhaling the 5%.  very strange that st. mikes being the adult cf centre doesnt use the higher dose....when I asked my dr, just said wont make difference.  </P>

I will def. Ask about the 5% how does it stay sterile in the bag? Does it require a script? The pharmacist at cf foundation gave me the formula to make the 7% by mixing 3% and 10% which in the states you dont need prescriptions for. Only the 7% needs a prescription because of the label on the boxes. Did your doctor ok you to try the 7%?

<P>You will need a syringe to draw out the hypertonic saline.....then you must keep bag in fridge after punctured and throw out after<STRONG> <U>one week</U></STRONG> and start new bag....st. mikes has been doing it for this way for years...each time you access the bag you will wipe end with alchol and use new syringe and deposit into neb cup...</P>
<P> </P>
<P>No my dr. has not given me a script for 7%....I will see her Aug.30th and tell her I want to try it.....but I know what she ll say...NO Difference....and more irritating and I do have to be careful as I do have occassional hemoptysis......</P>
