A qu about Chest PT and reflux

Hi all, just wondering if anyone has been in this position. My little girl has CF (she is 6 months old) and we have been told to put a hold on chest PT until her reflux settles. Some days she is constantly throwing up; some days she is a bit better with little spit ups here and there (guaranteed after each feed though). Her weight gain is a primary focus at the moment as she is hovering around the 10th percentile (maybe a little under) for both height and weight. She has PI and takes Creon, btw. I understand that it could be counter-productive for chest PT to be done, especially if it were to make her throw up and then lose those calories and also risk vomit aspiration. I find it hard sometimes though, thinking that I may somehow be doing her an injustice by not giving her daily chest PT (even if I am following dr.'s advice). Have any of you been through something similar? Does it sound right to be doing this? TIA!

DS had reflux and was put on zantac. We've been doing CPT on him since he was about a week old. We DID wait a bit after feeding him before beating him. Usually did CPT before he was due for a bottle. Rarely had problems with him spitting up, vomiting, unless he had a stomach bug or was coming down with an ear infection -- then his tummy was upset 'cuz he was sick.

Thanks for your reply Liza.. Sienna always seems to have something there ready to come back up. The physio tried it in the hospital and it was at least 2 hours (prob closer to 3) since Sienna's last feed, some light physio and she was spitting up (inc some enzymes). I do try to do a little sometimes in the morning, but really not much. Maybe she just has bad reflux and I should just hope that she outgrows it really soon!

Is she on anything like prevacid or zantac? Maybe that would help. And even with zantac, DS would sometimes spit up at night like your daughter several hours after a feeding and still have enzymes with it.

Since her hospital visit last month she has been taking Losec (aka Omeprazole) and I think it is helping a little bit overall. All of the nurses and dr.s at the hospital seemed to suggest this one but maybe another med might suit her better?! Hmm.. I think I will ask at her next clinic appt.

My daughter had severe reflux starting at one month of age. She would projectile vomit a few times a day. At three months of age she started on ng tube feedings because she refused to eat and could not keep much down. At seven months of age an endoscopy showed she had a milk allergy. Once we switched her formula to Nutramigen she stopped vomiting and started to drink her bottles. We did not stop her cpt during all of this. If they are sitting up while you do the cpt, I wouldn't think it would be a problem. One other thing to be concerned about is asperating into the lungs. My daughter had pneumonia because of this when she was three months old. So cpt would help with this problem as well.

My son also had severe reflux, along with the choking, liquid coming out of nose, secondary infections from the reflux, slow growth rate, projectile vomiting of ounces and onces at a time, and aspirating pneumonia. We ended up having the nissan surgery due to the reflux and aspiration but we always performed CPT. However, they told us not to use any of the tilting exercises with CPT becuase of the reflux, only pounding.
