abdominal pains when coughing

Hi there,

Just was wondering if anyone else has had abdominal pains from coughing when pregnant?

Sometimes when I cough, my lower right or lower left stomach hurts (like right in that crease between your legs and stomach). Almost like I'm going to give myself a hernia or something. I've only noticed this pain since being pregnant. The pain only lasts a couple seconds after coughing.

I've heard of hernias from coughing, and I'm really wondering if that's what might be happening, especially with the abdominal muscles being stretched during pregnancy.

Thanks!

My guess is that it is your round ligaments stretching, aka round ligament pain. Especially since you feel it on both sides. VERY common during pregnancy. I actually notice it (only on my left) right after I empty my bladder in the morning as the uterus is lowering itself back into my pelvis.

Google it and you'll probably be convinced that is what it is.

I have stomache pains right now from coughing so hard - I just got off of IV 2 weeks ago, was so much better, but now I think I picked up a virus somewhere. My cough is back and I have the "tickle" in my chest, post nasal drip, scratchy eyes.. but I am coughing SO hard that I feel like I'm going to cough my baby right out - now I know that's not possible, but I'm 30 weeks pregnant and so scared that I'm going to cause myself to have contractions or something from coughing so hard <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

What you are feeling is most likely the round ligament pain.... just things hurting from the ligaments stretching out. When you move suddenly is when you most likely feel the pains, or when you cough, etc. Coughing really does work lots of muscles.... you really realize that when you're preggers lol!

Yes! You found your round ligaments! I had lots of round ligament pain from very early on all the way to the end of the pregnancy. I found that if lying down, curing my legs up in the fetal type position eased the pain. And if I was standing up, I would crouch down (even in public!) to cough because that's much better than passing out from that shooting pain. (I never passed out by the way, but was caught off guard one time and came oh so close)

If you use the crouching/curling method you should be good to go.
