My 3 yr old is showing signs of cf and is having the sweat test this week. Can anyone explain a bit about what the test is like? I'm also wondering if we will get results right away ot how long it takes. Needless to say we're pretty anxious.

My daughter just had a sweat test a few weeks ago. I have heard that different facilities test different but I can tell you about our experience.

When we got there they first cleaned her arm with some solution (I dont remember what it was called). Then they put two electroid things on either side of her arm and connected them to what reminded me of mini jumper cables hooked to a batterie. They turned the battery up to 2 and we had to leave it on for 10 min. When they took it off there was a red cirle on her arm and they put a little patch on her to collect the sweat. We had to leave that on for 25min. When they took it off they weighed it to see if there was enuff sweat and then we got to go.

I asked them how long it took to get the results and they told me one hr and then another hr to wright up a report and send it to her pediatrican. Our apt was late in the day but when I called her doc in the morning they had the results.

I would ask if you can call them directly or if you have to get the results from your pcp.

I can understand your anxiety. My children have been sweat tested recently and the procedure that Ashley described was very similar to the tests we had run.

Our CF center only does testing before 11 am, so we have had the results each time by 4 pm. This was extremely helpful as I was anxious to know the results.

Are you having your 3 yo tested at an accredited CF center? If not I would reccomend changing the appointment. Accredited CF centers run the test more frequently and have more reliable results than non-cf centers.

Also as a guide for reading sweat test numbers the results read like this:
0-39 normal
40-59 borderline
60-up positive

When you recieve your results be sure to ask for the sweat chloride number and not just a positive or negative. There are also many people on this site who had "normal" sweat chloride numbers who have actually had CF. My daughters are currently in the process of having the extensive genetic testing (testing for all 1500+ mutations)completed after their sweat tests came back at 38&39. When I initially asked for their results it was told to me they were negative, and only upon further research did I discover there is some grey area in the normal values.

I know nothing can relieve your anxiety at such a stressful time, but I do hope this info helps your family understand more of what will be going on. <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0">

Good Luck
