ABPA - allergic reaction to aspergillus (in a nutshell!)

I'm taking a random poll!
My son is in the process of either being diagnosed with ABPA or ruling it out. At our clinic they don't begin to routinely check IgE levels until age 10 as that's when it is more common to culture aspergillus and/or "develop" ABPA. I asked for a RAST test in June to rule out common allergies and, although he doesn't yet culture aspergillus and wasn't allergic to anything else, his IgE levels were still elevated. Have I lost you yet?
Our nurse said their youngest ABPA patient (at our clinic) was six - my son is 5! So I'm curious, for those of you who have kids that have a dx of ABPA, how old were they when first diagnosed with it?

Andrew was 9 when he was diagnosed. He is now 12. He cultures aspergillus almost every three months at clinic.

Tonya, when Andrew is having a flare up, how do you generally treat it? And do you recall the process/tests he went through to dx the ABPA?

Andrew was diagnosed from positive aspergillus cultures and a high IgE level. He is treated with prednisone, however we are currently discussing other options because the steroids are really affecting his mood/outlook/behavior.

Hello!

I was diagnosed with ABPA when I was about 11ish. I've had a few issues with it, but I'm 21 now, and it's been under control for quite some time now, and I am rather pleased! To treat it, I usually just go on Prednisone and Sporonox. (I hate Pred, so I go on a lower dose of that and add sporonox - luckily, that combo has worked for me! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> )

We are a bit different in that Ashley (our CFer) does not have ABPA. Her sister, Armanda (NO CF) has ABPA. She had issues as a young baby - 3 months and 5 months pneumonia with hospital stays both times but nothing after until age 13. Then it seems when puberty hit so did the ABPA. She almost had a lobectomy because they did not put the sisters together (different last names and very different coloring) but the doctors changed their minds and we went on Prednisone and vest CPT daily. She has had two flare-ups where the Prednisone had to be increased due to very high IGE levels. But now we are on prophylactic prednisone.

Thankfully Ashley has not had elevated IGE or any other issues with ABPA.

My son Jake is in the process of being diagnosed with ABPA or ruling it out. He is 10 now, but was 9 when his IgE came been extremely elevated, in the 7,000s. He is on prednisone right now. His last IgE was in the 4,000s. I am waiting for the results of some more testing for ABPA.
