abpa??

so i was recently in the hospital for pneumonia and i had a bronchoscopy..first one...and waited on the results because i have a cavity in my lung. not soo sure how i got it except my doctor said it might have to do with aspergillus? or however you spell it and she said i had the allergic reaction kind and i dont exactly know how that works?
and im getting started on prednisone and sporonox soon so yeah.
my doc said this would explain like me being tired all the time etc.
but anyone who has it could they explain abpa and stuff and the affects and or side effects of prednisone and if it is really bad??
im assuming it is since i have a cavity in my lung so yeah.
im kinda scared.

There's lots of information on ABPA on the message boards here, as well as online. Generally speaking high dose steroids have been the standard treatment. There are however some newer, friendlier (and as such more expensive) drugs out there for use as an anti-inflammatory. Also, there's debate whether oral antifungals are effective as the aspergillus usually doesn't colonize the lung tissue, rather the mucus only and the inflammatory response is essentially contact only. Best of luck, do your research and then talk to you doc.

if your IGE is under 1000 I would ask to immediately be considered for xolair injections which binds the IGE in your body rendering it unable to escalate the allergic reaction/inflammatory response due to the IGE. It has worked wonders for me. I am assuming with the extent you have it is over 1000 but keep it in mind for after the steroid treatmetn if yours settles out at under 1000. Mine was over 1000 initially and after steroid treatments for months it settled down to around 2-400 range and I have had miraculous results with xolair. It IS expensive though.
