Acapella does it work

I tried to post from my phone, but it didn't work. Anyway, I am in the hospital, lost 25 pounds since June. Fev1 dropped from 80 to 37 and insurance is only covering 60% of stay. So, I'm trying to save money and am trying acapella instead of being charged for respiratory therapists and cpt. My doc is satisfied, but I just wonder if the acapella is as good? Thanks for input! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hi Jeana
I am sorry you are unwell. A significant drop like that is scary so it sounds like you are in the right place. I have used acapella, as well as pep, flutter and of course manual cpt. I mostly use pep this days because i think it is most effective. I love being able to plug it into a pari neb set and doing saline/hts as i feel the moisture pressure combo is most effective for me - especially when there is lots of muck there. That being said i think manual cpt is the best thing when i am sick.

As for the acapella (im assuming you cant get a pep?) it does work to some degree, i like being able to lie on my sides and do posteral drainage on my sides while using it but i do get a bit frustrated not being able to change the pressures and i cant always feel the areas i am targeting with it. Another cheap option (dont laugh) would be bubble pep? I always found it effective as a child and i will occaisionally still do it just to mix it up a bit! It would only cost you a few $$$ to set up and IMO might be better than acapella.

I hope you start to feel better really soon and find something that works to get that muck out! Best of luck.

My last hospital stay if I would have had to pay for 40% would be around $66k I'm not sure how you do that. Good luck to you! I never found for acapella to be worth anything for me.

Jeana,

I am sorry you are not doing well and having these hospital bill issues.

Do you have a Vest and is it in the hospital with you? I was taught to do the Acapella while Vesting, pause - cough, vest for a while, rinse and repeat. About 3 sets of ten exhalations through the Acapella.

With all that weight loss, I am not sure where your strength is, but if you can...this sounds pathetic but I do it...clap your own chest. I do my lower and middle lobes by reaching across my body, and the middle of my chest above my breasts. It is not as effective as when my husband does it, but it is better than nothing.

Ugh. I cannot believe you can't get coverage for cpt. :-(

Jeana,

I don't have anything to add, really, but wanted to tell you I'm so sorry to hear you're having such a bad time. I'll be praying for you and hope you're able to get that FEV1 back up soon and get home.

I've personally found the flutter to work best for me, over acapella or MPT. I usually find I have to relax and do it for ten or twenty minutes before anything will even come up. But when it does, it is a lot of gunk.

Hi Jeana, I don't have any advice for you but I wanted to tell you I'm thinking of you and your family. Sounds like a difficult time - it will get easier. Just stick with it and keep your chin up. I'm hoping you have an out-of-pocket max or coinsurance max that won't make the 40% as bad as it seems. Mine is $2500 in network, $5K out.
