Have any of you had any luck getting Acetylcysteine 20% yet? Last month my pharmacy filled it with 10% , but now they say they are also unable to get that! Ugh.

What's the deal here? Are they going to stop making it? I'm kind of panicking. I feel like it works so much better for me than hypertonic saline (although I use that too).

Anyway please post if you have any news and/or have been able to get it recently.

Thanks!

I think mucomyst works great too, but it does tend to make my bronchospasms/asthma worse, so I use the hypertonic saline most of the time and the mucomyst for infections.

I just got home from picking up some other refills at Walgreens. While I was there I asked them about the Acetylcysteine, and they said that they have been continuing to try to order it twice a week but that it is on "long term back order". I have completely been without it for a while now and my lungs are starting to feel it. Ugh.

So when I got home I found online from the FDA just updated on Tuesday :

http://www.fda.gov/drugs/drugsafety/drugshortages/ucm050792.htm

It looks like the earliest possible release is September but even then retail pharmacies my not get any as it goes to hospitals first. The other company, Roxane, which is where my pharmacy usually gets it, says it's anticipated release is December 2011. Scary, who knows how long we'll actually be without it!

Hello,
I haven't posted anything on here in a long time (even forgot what my log-in was), but thought I would share my findings on this topic. I've heard that doctor's have recently started prescribing ACETYLCYSTEINE for some sort of kidney problems. So people have started drinking it in a much higher frequency. The company hasn't been able to increase their production quickly however (so that is why it is so hard to find). I keep hearing from several sources that they expect more to be available in October or November. I've also found out that Horses (maybe other animals as well) also use ACETYLCYSTEINE for various things. I had him checked (just because I was curious) to see if it is available for horses, he said apparantly they haven't been filing the orders for vets in quite a few months because any available supply has been given to humans (tough luck horses!). My pharmacy hasn't been able to find any ACETYLCYSTEINE in almost a month...I ran out and now am on Pulmozyme (which doesn't work nearly as well for me and is more than 10 times more expensive for me). Hopefully we're all able to get more in the next few month.
Good luck!
