Acid Reflux

Hi all - I have a child with CF (that did not have acid reflux), but my cousin's child does. I know that he and his wife were not tested for the CF gene (for reasons I will never understand).. Anyway, his child has severe acid reflux and is miserable. My question is, how many of you were diagnosed, or have a child that was diagnosed with CF because of this. I know is can be a symptom, but I don't know if it is one that "rates" at the top of the list. Any help is much appreciated! Thanks!!!<img src="i/expressions/rose.gif" border="0">

I now have severe GERD, but I did not as an infant or young child. I did not develop reflux until I was an adolescent. I haven't ever known anyone to be diagnosed with CF because of this, but I certainly wouldn't rule it out. I will say that the pancreas creates three products for the body (perhaps more) 1-enzymes to digest 2-base to counteract the acids, so as not to eat the lining of the stomach 3-insulin. Usually that is the order in which the pancreas stops producing because of damage. I'm sure there are instances where it is otherwise, but generally digestion problems come first and it seems rarer to find a person with acid problems that does not also have digestion problems (where CF is concerned). Could your cousin's child have a hiatal hernia (where the sphincter at the top of the stomach doesn't close all the way)? Have they tried elimination diets to determine if it is related to food sensitivities? Is he over-eating at a single feeding and waiting too long in between? Those would be the things I checked first. It could be as simple as him not tolerating dairy, soy or wheat products. Hope that helps.

I wasn't diagnosed because of acid reflux. I had meconium ileus and surgery at two days old.

But I most certainly have acid reflux. I've been on different antacids for something like 8-10 years. I was on Zantac first, but that didn't work. Then I went to Prilosec. After that went OTC (and insurance would no longer cover it), I switched to Nexium (the *other* purple pill). The Nexium seems to be working fine. Is your cousin's child on any type of med to try and keep the acid reflux at bay?

He is on meds, but to be honest, I haven't talked to him about this... I only know because of other family members that have talked to him about how uncomfortable his son is. I want to mention CF because there is always the chance, due to my child, but I am not sure he will even consider it a possibility...afterall, he already knows it runs in the family. I also have to point out that I just learned of the acid reflux a few days ago so it isn't as if I have been "holding onto" this information for a long time. I am just trying to find out how to give him a hint without having him freek out. Any suffestions are welcome

Oh. Hah. For some reason, and I don't know why, I thought your cousin's child was already diagnosed, and you were asking mostly about how uncomfortable he is. Hah, durrrrr me. Anyway, do you think they won't consider CF a possibility because of the shock factor "*MY* child can't have CF, he's perfect" or whatever else? Because if so, just tell them to have him tested for it, get it out of the way, to rule it out as a reason for the acid reflux. If this is the case, use the phrase "rule it out" because that seems to have a better feeling to it. If that's not the issue... then why aren't they wondering about CF?
