acid reflux

There are lots, but what works varies person to person: Pepcid, Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium, Zantac, etc. You sort of have to try a few to find what helps the most for you

A little off the question, but.... I have recently came to the conclusion that refux is a very serious component to our disease. I encourage anyone that has any GI symptoms to get a work up done and be compliant with that treatment. Reflux causes hyperactive airways, which can cause nighttime wheezing/coughing. Not to mention reflux also causes bronchiectasis, which can only make ours worse. I truly believe that my reflux is partially responsible for the bronchiectasis that has laid roots in my right lung, predominately my RUL which is exactly where the damage from reflux would be.

As to the question, other than what coll listed; tagamet, pepcid, protonix, aciphex are a couple more. There are two different types of medicine so it is important to discuss with your doc to find the best one for you.

i currently take pariet, tazac and mucaine [when it gets really bad]. i was put on the tazac recently to see if it would stop me from vomiting all the time. and so far it has worked! i have only puked once since using it. i figure that my reflux was so bad that it would just end up finding a way out and that was when i would cough. i can certainly tell when i forget to take the pariet for more than 2 days. i hope i havent damaged my lungs from not having the acid under complete control before. i agree with luke that if you are having symptoms, get them checked out! sometimes people will say 'oh its just a little bit of heartburn etc' but its quite serious and can even affect how well your enzymes work if left untreated.

A question- Non CF related- Has anyone heard that acid reflux is a sign of lung cancer or a lung related disease? Just worried about my Dad! Thanks!

I just inquired on another site about Licorice because last night I went out for drinks with my neighbor & had Sambuka (sp?) the licorice tasting stuff. It ws warm going down & I literally felt things loosen up in my chest & I coughed up a big, dry plug that evidently has been there. I wasnt sure it was connected to the drink because I dont drink enough nor am I crazy about licorice. Anyway I looked up licorice & its used for many things. Respiratory, PMS & Acid Reglux. The site I found is very informative. It gives the different forms that licorice comes in & the recommended amounts for the problem its being used for. It also lists the meds that licorice is KNOWN to interact with which is mostly high blood pressures meds. Of course like anything you need to be careful & check with your doctor etc. I am not necessarily advocating it. I just found it intersting. For those of you with kids.....the licorice candy is not the real stuff I found out. The real licorice herb is what is needed. Maybe this can help with the acid reflux. I also personally found that any type of mint tea helps.

I've been on four different meds for acid reflux; Prilosec, Prevacid, Zantac, and Nexium. Out of them all, I find that Nexium works the best for me. I've taken it every other day for the past year and a half and since I've been on it, I've never had heartburn once. In fact, both my dad and my sister (both w/out CF) have acid reflux as well. They, too, are on Nexium and have never had another problem since.

Hope that helps.

My boys have been on Ranitidine Hydrochloride for reflux since they were 3 months old. They are now 11 and it seems to be working great for them.

Thank you, everyone. Your responses were helpful. My daughter has only recently begun to feel acid rising and has never vomited from it, but it has caused her to cough. We will check with her doctor if this symptom continues with the zantac; so far it happens once a week at most, but seems pretty unpleasant.
