acne treatment

My 19 year old daughter has acne. She is using differin and azaleic acid --her skin is now dry, irritated and she still has acne. Does anyone have any experience with this? She also takes zithromax. Has anyone out there tried any other antibiotics with the zithromax in order to deal with acne? Many thanks.

I had acne due to medications that I was on, making my skin go from one extreme to the next, so I went to a dermetologist. He prescribed something for me. I was on it and at first my skin was really irritated, but after a week or so it calmned down and it really seems to help. The only advice I can give you is to see a dermetologist. Some of these over the counter medications for acne can react with certain types of other medications (that's why I'm on a topical cream). Just thought I'd let you know. Hope it helped.

I had the same problem when i turned 30. All of a sudden i got acne , went to the dermatologist, and she gave me "Retin -a micro". All that did was dry the heck out of my skin. My doctor put me on the antibiotic "minocycline" for my lung infection and every time i was on it my skin cleared up. Then when he had me on a rotating cycle of two weeks on, two weeks off, the acne cleared up completely. I read somewhere that they use tetracycline to clear up acne, and my doctor also told me that happens a lot when cf patients with acne use minocycline. It helps the lungs and clears the skin as an added bonus~ Diane 39 / cf / diabetes / b.cepacia

HI, My daughter uses Doxycyclene. It's an antibiotic. Because she is on the Zythromax already, I don't allow her to use it on the mornings she takes her Zithro. No one ever told me not to I just did. I don't want to take the chance of anything interfering with how the Zithro works. Her peds. doc prescribed it, he knows all she is on, her CF docs know she takes it. She takes it twice a day. She will have a few pop up here and there but if she leaves the darn things alone (they are not noticeable, only to her eagle eye)... It works pretty good. Ask your docs about it. She's been off and on it for about two and a half years now. Liza

Thank you everyone---your ideas and experiences really help. I will ask her dermatologist and CF doctor about minocycline and doxcicycline and whether or not she can take one of them with the zithromax.

dermotologist are pretty much in the dark when it comes to acne. And I was in the dark when it came to my acne. Turns out it started exactly when I started zithromax and went away when I unknowingly went off it. Then of course it came back when I was represcribed it. I've been off it for 3 weeks and things are slowly getting better but it's still frustrating. I just wish I thought more about it a year and a half ago and saved myself SO MUCH agony! Acne is by far the worst thing that has ever happened to me in my 20 years of living. Naive maybe but oh well it's the truth.

I did a 5-month course of Accutane (I think I was on 40mg BID, but I can't remember for sure -- my dermatologist said he put me on the strongest dose) when my acne got out of control (I was 21 at the time). My dermatologist insisted that he speak with my CF docs and get the okay before he could prescribe it. My CF docs okay-ed it and my dermatologist kept in contact with my CF docs during the course of my treatment. The only oral antibiotic I was on at the time was Cipro (750mg BID). I was also doing DNAse and The Vest. I saw my dermatologist every month (that's "required" for Accutane, since it can be toxic) and saw my CF docs every other month (I usually see my CF docs every 3 months) just to make sure everything was working the way it should! Lung functions were not affected by Accutane. While it was a nightmare to be on it, my skin is clear now (been off of Accutane for about 18 months, I think) and I don't regret the decision. Why Accutane is a nightmare:My skin was so very dry, that it peeled regularly and became red and inflamed. It was also very sensitve -- almost like a sunburnMy lips got so chapped, despite the teaspoons of Aquaphor I applied dailyMy acne got worse before it got betterDoesn't sound like much, but you should've seen me! I could barely open my mouth to eat because my lips were so chapped, and smiling was NOT something I did. Ouch!Anyway, if the acne's that bad and you're serious about "fixing" it (keep it mind that Accutane is not guaranteed permanent, though it has permanently cleared up acne in some patients, according to my dermatologist), consider Accutane.

And a note to the above post: your daughter has to take monthly pregnancy tests, since Accutane can cause severe birth defects, and I THINK they require her to be on at least one form of birth control.I was taking Ortho-Tricyclen, by the way, which was supposed to have an acne clearing effect itself. It didn't!

the pill [the one desinged for acne and excessive hair] can work wonders. even the normal dose ones work. quite a few cf women have weird hormones and can make acne worse.remember, cetaphil cetaphil cetaphil. this is the only thing id ever put on my skin. dont use any of the anti acne rubbish out there.

Oh please watch out for Accutane! It has severe and terrible side effects. Before all of the alegations came out about it causing depression, a friend of mine was severely depressed for several years - ended up not being able to complete college because he kept having to go back home - I mean, the depression was horrible - couldn't get out of bed or do anything. Anyway - when he went off Accutane - he was back to normal. The doc never told him depression was a side effect. He lost so many years of his life because of that drug. He wishes he never took it.

Today I go on minocycline for my acne. Turns out I have it from Zithromax but after I stopped taking it I still haven't cleared up. But anyway, has anyone that has taken minocycline while also taking cimetidine still seen results. On www.rxlist.com is says

"This family of drugs can increase the effects of digoxin, lithium, and of anticoagulants. Taking iron with tetracyclines may decrease the absorption, and cimetidine may also interfere with absorption. Diabetics should be aware that tetracyclines may reduce insulin requirements."

Thanks.

Also, for the people that were or are on minocycline how long did you take it for? All I got was a 4 week course with no refills. And I heard it takes a month to see results. So whats up with that?
