I did a 5-month course of Accutane (I think I was on 40mg BID, but I can't remember for sure -- my dermatologist said he put me on the strongest dose) when my acne got out of control (I was 21 at the time). My dermatologist insisted that he speak with my CF docs and get the okay before he could prescribe it. My CF docs okay-ed it and my dermatologist kept in contact with my CF docs during the course of my treatment. The only oral antibiotic I was on at the time was Cipro (750mg BID). I was also doing DNAse and The Vest. I saw my dermatologist every month (that's "required" for Accutane, since it can be toxic) and saw my CF docs every other month (I usually see my CF docs every 3 months) just to make sure everything was working the way it should! Lung functions were not affected by Accutane. While it was a nightmare to be on it, my skin is clear now (been off of Accutane for about 18 months, I think) and I don't regret the decision. Why Accutane is a nightmare:My skin was so very dry, that it peeled regularly and became red and inflamed. It was also very sensitve -- almost like a sunburnMy lips got so chapped, despite the teaspoons of Aquaphor I applied dailyMy acne got worse before it got betterDoesn't sound like much, but you should've seen me! I could barely open my mouth to eat because my lips were so chapped, and smiling was NOT something I did. Ouch!Anyway, if the acne's that bad and you're serious about "fixing" it (keep it mind that Accutane is not guaranteed permanent, though it has permanently cleared up acne in some patients, according to my dermatologist), consider Accutane.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">
