Okay so Adam had his pft's again this morning and they have gone down. So I know some of you have said not to look at the numbers but they are going up and down and he is in the hospital going on 3 weeks now.

What do you suggest i ask the dr's anything else that I can do? Any suggestions would help.

I have not gone through this before they always go up and this is really just scaring me.

thanks again

Ann,

I'm sorry you're experiencing this. I've been on IV meds 2 weeks and I always go up too, but this time I'm actually feeling worse, the longer I'm on them (pfts unchanged). Its very frustrating.

I'm hoping you get some good responses. Hope Adam starts feeling better.

Which part, specifically, of his PFTs are going down? If it's the FEV1, then that's something that will come up later once the inflammation has calmed down in the lungs. If his FVC is down, that means the antibiotics aren't quite doing their job and might need to be adjusted.

It's possible (it has happened to me) that the FEV1 goes down but the FVC goes up a bit. Usually it takes longer for my FEV1 to catch up. Hang in there. I know it's beyond frustrating and even a little scary. Getting back on track with IVs sometimes takes longer than expected because so many conditions have to come together the right way. Does Adam at least SEEM to be improving in mood, appetite, energy, etc? Remember that eating enough and getting some weight on is an important part of bringing up lung function.

Also, is he getting enough attention from respiratory therapists? See if maybe there's a better or different way they can do airway clearance with him.

Ann,

My doctors always said the PFTs should reach their peak a few weeks after the IV course is done, and I've really found this to always be the case. Somehow once I get back to my normal, active routine -- that's when my PFTs increase. Not while I'm lying around on IV; even though I might start to feel better.

Hope this helps & Best of Luck,
Kris
