I had a clinic visit this week and wondered why my doc ran blood tests for these vitamins since I am pancreatic sufficient. If mine are low I will let you know the outcome.

You need to make sure you are getting enough magnesium. Calcium needs magnesium to (absorb or work well..can't remember). CF meds deplete mg as well. You should probably be taking around 800 mg a day. If you're not getting that much you need to add a mg supplement. I am a HUGE supporter of Mg due to my own need for it and clear symptoms when I'm deficient. Most people in the US are deficient, especially people like us who take medications on a daily basis. 99% of mg is NOT in the blood so a blood level of mg is not accurate.

Also, the vitamin and mineral levels in your breastmilk should remain the same even if you increase your intake. Nutrients in BM are very consistent. I recently found a study that showed that the level of magnesium in BM remained the same independent of the mother's intake. So I wouldn't worry about the ADEKs and breastfeeding at all.

thanks everyone - the consensus at clinic was to take them too - it is really important to build my levels back up (which we know), so I am now an ADEK taker.

Caroline, I am going to look into the magnesuim, I just read something else about that somewhere (but can't remember now) - thanks!

Lauren, Nicole, I don't give vit drops either. My understanding was that though breastmilk is lower in vitamin D, the vitamin D produced is actually more readily absorbed by the body than that of a supplement and so often babies are still getting exactly what they need from mother's milk.
