Adoption questions

This is a topic that I am curious about... I won't be thinking about babies for many years as we have a lot to go through before then... but I like to know about things.
1) What was the adoption process like? (How long did it take, open or closed, etc..)
2) Has anyone foster adopted? (I work with several very cutie toddlers who are wards of the state and if it was 10 years from now I would scoop them up, except there are legal issues with druggie parents and whatnot... anyone have experience with this?)
- I have relatives who tried 3 times for open adoptions... they flew out to be there for the birth and pick up the babies and all trhee times the birth mothers changed their minds... they gave up after that because they were so heartbroken (this was after several miscarriages). It was a bad experience for them, but I think I would do it differently. I know there are tons of kids who need loving homes and I wouldn't be opposed to adopting an older baby or toddler. Just want to hear as much experiences as possible

Hi.  I adopted  4 children. We were not foster parents as
we knew we could not have them in our home and send them back after
we were attached to them, so we went straight into adoption.
 We got our 4 on the same day as they are siblings-2 boys and
2 girls..  <br>
The process for us went very easy,  We took the MAPP class (10
week or so course that explains the whole process.) The next day
they asked us if we were interested in my 4-we were like "ARE
YOU CRAZY??" Four all at one time.  Well we read about
them, then saw their picture and fell in love.  So they
screened several parents that were interested in them and chose us.
 Then we went to Pizza Hut, where the social workers
brought them for pizza.  They did not know who we were, to
them we were a couple of people at another table eating.  We
got observe them and fell even more in love with them.. 1 week
later we me them and have been together ever since-3 yrs.

Ry and I open adopted, and we didn't have any problems, really. We had one person change her mind, so we lost that baby, but we got Ahava in the end, so it was worth it. It took us one and a half years to adopt. I do want to add to have to mother change her mind three times in a row ...SUPER uncommon, I have never heard of a couple striking out three times.

These posts make me feel very hopeful. I always wanted to adopt kids but thought the process would be too hard and long because of CF. Just wanted to say thanks!

Both of my children are adopted. They are from Korea and were adopted as infants, three years apart. Took about 4 months for our daughter and 6-7 months for our son. We worked with an adoption that works with a Korean orphanage. Daughter was six months old and son seven months old when they arrived. Different states have different laws about how long the birth parents have to change their minds, so be sure to check that out if you ever decide to adopt. California, for example, gave birthmoms 6 months to change their minds. Don't know if that is still true. Best wishes!

We have two adopted daughters. Both adopted at birth and in open adoptions. We have had several failed or interrupted adoptions and one that we put a stop to ourselves (long story).
The first adoption took one day from the time we turned our life book in, until we were chosen. The second one (not counting failed) took three and a half weeks.
That is not typical at all, and I believe it only went that easy because the Lord was in control.

My husband and I have also considered adoption so I like to hear everyone's stories. One question I've always wondered though is how much money should someone plan on spending for the whole process? I would like to know just so we have an estimate of how long we might need to save money and plan. What are the general requirements for adoptive parents (income, do you have to own a house, etc?) I assume it's probably different for many states, has anyone in California done it?

Hi Lindsey, I do not have adopted children, but I have several friends who have and they all spend around $20,000. My husband and I are looking into it ourselves and have asked them alot of questions lately. Two of our friends adopted from the US and one got two little ones over seas they spent $22,ooo each child. They ones from the US they spent around $24,ooo. I know my one friend refinanced their home to get one of their children. I know my other friend somehow financed the adoption and they pay alittle over $300 amonth but for how long I am not sure we didn't go into that yet. I have three children of my own 2 w/cf and one without they are 9, 5, 2. So we were going to wait another year or so. Sorry I don't have more information. But hope that gives you some idea.

Thanks Jeanine...I had thought it was around $10,000, so I guess I was a little off!! Is that amount all due at one time, or is it like $5000 for one step, $7000 for something else, etc?

AN average domestic, private agency adoption costs anywhere from 4,000 to 30,000 dollars. I highly, highly reccommend the booklet "how to make adoption an affordable option" It makes it much, much, much easier. You can get the booklet here.
