The whole issue with Teri Shaivo was that she DID NOT have an advance directive.

A parent, spouse or doctor cannot override anything that is is WRITING and signed by the patient.

Rest assured Teri, that your doctor will be REQUIRED BY LAW to uphold your wishes, regardless of any conflict between your spouse and parents.

I have been looking into this myself as well. Thanks everyone for your advice and links.

I have a question though, what if you don't have anyone close to you that you trust for your care? I am single, and sadly I simply don't trust my mother to obey my wishes if I cannot speak for myself. :/ This is probably kind of a rare circumstance, you guys all seem to be attached or close to your families... but I'm just not, and it's something that's been weighing heavily on me. I don't know who to put in charge of my care should I become very sick. Will an advanced directive with explicit directions be "enough?"

I do have some very, very close friends but I don't really want to put a burden on someone that is a friend, not a significant other. :/

Sevenstars,

At the very least, make sure your doctor gets a copy of any directive you have, if you can't find family or friends to give this info to.
