advice on scar healing

Hi,

I figured this might be an okay place to post because many ppl with CF have had bowel surgery as well as transplant patients ao they have had to deal with scars as well.

I measured the scar on my belly today..It took me all this time to work up the courage to do it.. It is 13 1/4 inches long and in the thickest part it is a little over an inch wide.... I also have a horrible scar on my neck from the central line being in, I had an allergic reaction to the tegraderm and have skin burn.

My question is for those of you who might know.. what is the best thing to put on a scar to make it heal? Also, how long do you have to wait before you can start putting the stuff on it? Right now the staples came out a few days ago and I still have steri-strips on it..

My neck looks horrible and I know no one looks at my belly but I can't stop looking at it.. every time I get up I look in the long veiw mirror.... It really does look like I was bit by a shark.. and attacked by a vampire.

Don't get me wrong..> I am happy they were able to reroute my plumbing without giving me a colostomy bag but anyway..

Thanks

Jennifer

Jen,

Here's what I know...

1 - There are some great over the counter meds/treatments for scars now. Just Google and you'll find them.

2 - Keep pressure on the scar tissue. Pressure reduces scar tissue.

3 - Ask you Dr. There have been huge advances in scar therapy recently.

Your wounds are still new so now is definitely the time to look into scar therapy but they also have a lot of healing to do so try not to let the way the wound looks today worry you too much.

Glad you're back!

If you can find a vitamin E oil that works wonders.
If you cant find the oil then you can break Vitamin E capsules and apply it to the scar. Thats what I did after my lobeectomy and my scar is minimal now. I never thought it would heal as well as it did.

Hey Jennifer,
I put Vitamin E on mine as soon as the steri strips came off and also did not let the sun hit it for 6 mo. Mine is not very noticable at all and it even tans. It will look worse before it gets better, hope that helps a little.

Hi Jennifer

A combination of Vitamin E and a product called BioOil should have good results on any scarring.

As for when you can start applying it - i would check with your doctors about that.

Good luck, glad to have to you back with us with all your bits in tact, hope you've reported the crap care you had while in hospital, i too can't believe what you went through!! Taking your call button off you was just shocking, they should be sacked!!!

Good luck

Vit E-get gelatin capsules that you'd get for oral use and prick them with a pin and squeeze them right on the scar. That will definately help with the redness and healing of it, and minimize the appearance. If you are still concerned-I don't know how your insurance is or what your cf care team can do to help you, but look into laser therapy. I do know of clinics that have helped getting insurance co's to cover parts of cosmetic/scar procedures.

I agree with what everyone has said..

additionally, If you end up with bad Keloid scarring (like I did post tx) they can injected the scar directly with steriods which reduces the Keloiding...(kinda last care senario)

The other product that works really well is silicone strips, which have been proven to help reduce the appearance of scars...

You need to wait until the scar has completely healed....(it will fade in time)

Good luck
