Hi, we are a family with a daughter with CF.
I have just been made redundant and my family have always wanted to move to florida so i said i would investigate.
How do we get medical insurance for our daughter?
Where do i find a job before we emigrate HGV driver or Transport Manager?
Is it as simple as getting up and going?

Any advice would be grateful.

Thank You

Family from UK

I'm not really sure about how easy it is going to be just getting up and going...but if you feel that this would be the best decision for you and your family then do it.
As for health coverage you will probably be able to get that through employment I would try and find a job maybe before you come her you can post a resume on www.monster.com.
There is also a program called Rite-Care I know it is for families with no insurance when they first get pregnant...I'm not really sure if they take you on afterwards.
Hope I was some help...Good Luck with everything.

Nothing is simple when it comes to moving especially when trying to deal with CF. Insurance here varies according to the employers & what if any that they offer. State coverage varies with guidelines. We have a few people from Florida that might be able to direct you to some type of website to investigate potential jobs & answer in more detail insurance thru the state etc. Being you will not be a US citizen that is another factor that will make a difference at some point!

maybe others from usa can help with this, but i thought humidity like they have in florida is not best for people with cf. is this true ? i remember a post where someone said arizona or hot dry places are better for your health than humid ones.

I am not really sure how the humidity in Florida I live in RI and we have both warm and cold weather unfortuantly so my niece is more prone to getting sick during the winter. I had said to my sister we should move so we don't have a winter...but I think the nice weather would be good for her and the salt water I heard is supposed to be good to. What is the weather like were your from?

I would definitely check the weather before you make such a BIG move. The humidity in Florida is very high most of the year and a lot of CFers note humidity as a problem for them.

I know Sean really struggles during the humid months here in Michigan.

One more thing...

It's probably not going to be as easy as finding a job and moving. Your prospective employer will have to file paperwork with the US government so you are able to work here. They also need to provide proof that the job couldn't be filled by an American citizen (i.e. what skills do you have that a US citizen does not). If satisfied, the government will issue you a work visa.

It's been a while since I've been involved with this but those are the basics.

I'm sure you could do a search on the internet for US work visas and find out more.

Well, if you are no american citizens I would also say you need a residence and work permission and that is not so easy to get. You will find informations on the website of the american embassy.
The other thing is that there are much difficulties in the USA to get an insurance that pays for everything, if you are sick. You will find many posts concerning problems with insurances on this site.
And if you are working you do normally have only a few days of vacation a year and do often have to take your vacation time, if you are sick. So it could be very hard with a sick child, because you might need two incomes. Its also quite easy to get fired, well but I don´t know how this works in the UK.
My boyfriend was always thinking of going to America, but I would never have done it. I love to travel in the USA but I had 35 (working days) of vacation here, no problems if I was sick or on IVs and staying at home, my insurance pays for everything and I had no problems with quitting work this year because of my health.

I heard with hot dry places it is more difficult to cough stuff up because the mucus in our lungs gets even more dehydrated. The hot, dry places are good, though, because it is more difficult for bacteria to grow. humid polaces are just the opposite, easy to cough stuff up, but also easy for infections to grow.

why don't you start with a holiday home then you can stay at different times of the year to try it out, and you would be earning from rental the other times. That way you will have an insight of the way of life out there, sounds good to stay in Florida, we love Florida, going out again next year for holiday.
