joe is getting the acapella at his next hosp.appt. in 4 weeks .is it right that there is no effort on the part of whoever is using ?? do you just breath onto it and the device does the work?. joe is using the pep mask just now , he hates it and so he makes it a battle every time he uses it.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-frown.gif" border="0"></end quote></div>

Is that the question you needed answered? I'm not sure which one you meant when you said it had been there for a month.

The Acapella is like the Flutter valve--the patient has to blow into it. It is also like the pep valve in the sense that it is designed to provide resistance. The benefit is that it makes you learn to breathe deeply in a controlled way.

I don't know of anything that is a "passive" device for airway clearance aside from the vest. With the vest you just sit there and it shakes you. The next best thing I can think of would be the Percussion-Air, which uses an air compressor and circuitry to deliver short burst of forced air into the lungs.

I hope that answers your question, and I'm very sorry you felt ignored!

Why yikes? The fact that something is sonic just means that it is a sound wave. There's nothing radioactive or anything like that about it. Sonic waves at certain frequencies are extremely beneficial for loosening up things like mucus. They are able to vibrate enough to jostle even the smallest particles. Pretty cool, eh?

I wouldn't say that there's no effort on the part of the user. Yes, all you have to do is breathe, but the purpose of the acapella is to vibrate the airways and shake the mucus loose, allowing the user to cough it out. The benefit of the acapella is that it actually strengthens the lungs because you have to force air into the device. There are resistance settings, too, to make it easier or more difficult to get the correct vibration.

I love it and wouldn't use anything else.

How old do you have to be to use the acapella? Kaylee is a small-for-her-age almost 4 yr old. Her babysitter uses vest in am and afternoon, but it is too heavy and expensive to lug back and forth to her home. If Kaylee had the acapella, she could do one more treatment before bed, and on saturdays's when she goes to a different babysitter for about 6 hrs. This babysitter has 4 children of her own, (one is a baby), so it is hard for her to lug this vest and we are afraid of it being damaged moving around. Thanks you guys.
