Air Purifier

My 2 ½ yr old has CF and we are looking to purchace an air purifier for our home built in the 1940's. We want something that will remove mold spores as well as other bacteria, dander, allergens, etc. Is there a researched or recommended type/ brand for patients with CF?

I don't know about the recommended or researched ones for CF patients (although i'd love to know if there are as well) but we are currently using Therapures throughout our home. We have smaller ones for the bedrooms (3) and a larger one for the living area where we do all treatments and playtime. These are Hepa-type permanent filters that are easy to maintain but i would LOVE something that really does work extremely well.

Hi. After asking this question myself a few months back (search former threads on this) we settled on the IQAir Health Pro Plus. It has a hepa filter and carbon filter, and does not have ozone (which is bad for cf lungs). It is fairly expensive ($850 for a unit that is supposed to clean 2000 square feet..i think).

Also, you want one that really takes out the fine particulates, which filters up to either .03 or .3 microns (again, can't remember the exact number here, but not all filters filter out these really small particulates, so ask when you are deciding).

They also have a whole house filter, which I believe is about $4K, but it doesn't filter out these smaller particulates.

I might also add that I believe UV light is supposed to be REALLY BAD for CF lungs because it creates ozone. The IQAir does not have UV.

Also of note, my husband is really allergic to dust mites. My daughter ended up sleeping in our room one night, so he rolled her purifier in. For the first time in 30 years, he woke up without a bunch of gunk that he needed to cough up. I myself have never had a single allergy, so I couldn't relate. But, it really seemed to work for him.

Thanks for the heads up on the UV light! We've turned off that feature now but I was wondering if there is an article or something that i could show to my husband and read myself about what exactly this "ozone" does that would be really helpful.

While i wish we could afford something as nice as the IQAir it's just simply not affordable right now coming out of our pockets. Maybe something we'll have to discuss with my inlaws since they've been an incredible help since Parker's diagnosis. I hate that what i "thought" was helping my son could be potentially hurting him more. Just kills me! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> Can only do my best....

Thanks for the heads up on the UV light! We've turned off that feature now but I was wondering if there is an article or something that i could show to my husband and read myself about what exactly this "ozone" does that would be really helpful.
