We spent around $800 on ours, and I love it. We bought the IQair healthpro plus...but you do have to eventually buy replacement filters. We are really happy with it.

I have 2 of the Honeywell 50250 , about 200. each.
Life Time Hepa Filter and a Prefilter that you change every 6 months
The Hepa is to Vacuumed every 6 months ..
They take a lot of Oders and Germs out of the air.
But do not use the ionizer setting. I think someone already
brought that up.
