alcohol and CF

I know alcohol is bad for "healthy people" but do any CF'ers drink occasionally and how do your lungs feel the next day.

I can have as little as 2 drinks and pay for it the next day. I feel very congested and difficult to clear the airways.

When I was younger I overindulged on a regular basis. As I got older I started feeling the affects on my CF a lot more. Now adays (more so since my pregnancy 8 years ago) I might drink twice a year. I just dont find the fun in it anymore, I dont like having to spend a week getting my body back to where it should be. Besides being drained with no energy I usually feel like a truck is sitting on my chest & like every drop of fluid was drained from me. I am not referring to overindulgence either. I am talking a drink or two during the holidays or on a special occaision.

I drink on occasion. Not enough to get drunk, but I can go so far as to have quiet a few drinks and not affect my CF. The only thing that comes into place for me is my diabetes. I have to be careful to monitor my sugars to make sure they don't go too low or high. Plus us CF people always have to worry about liver damage.

Melissa I am finding the same as you just mentioned. 10 yrs ago I could drink all night and bounce right back the next morning. Now a days, 2 drinks and I feel like I have been devoid of all fluids for days and feel like I cant drink enough Gatorade / Water to get back on track. I have pretty much given it up as it is not enjoyable any longer. Guess age is starting to set in....

I used to get drunk A LOT. I used to get too many lung bleeds, I was getting trashed several times a week. I knew of a place every day of the week, to go to and get drunk for real cheap. That was in my manwhore days, because there was always that "I'm not only getting drunk to just get drunk, i'm getting drunk to enjou the drunk and try to bag a new chick" kind of way of being. I matured out of my manwhoreness a long LONG time ago. I grew out of it, like most men (hopefully) will also. That lifestyle leads to a general shallow existance, and in the end, noone will be around you thats decent.

As it is now, I drink once, or at the most twice on the weekends. I really try not to drink at all during the week, and I have zero desire to do so. The only time I feel any form of desire to drink during the week is when my local hockey team is playing. And if I drink that night, I do my best not to drink that much at all afterwards.

As for the actual act of alcohol upon my system, it dries out my lungs, like it will dry out everyones lungs. If i'm congested, it can be real bad, if im not congested and just dry, it's not that bad. I've found out that if you have CF where its not currently very severe, you arent that hurt by just occasional drinking. Alcohol and CF is never good, but it's less that bad if you have a general mild case, and like to get a litte trashed here and there.

About the time I was of drinking age, I got too much "cheap wine" one night, and had the usual reaction...I also at one time had too much "Jack Daniels", and that stopped me from ever having any sort of whiskey, again!

However, I was more self concious about the drinking and driving, that I always was the designated driver, and it didn't bother me because I never really felt the need to "get drunk". I later learned with my liver problems, (some CF'rs have liver problems), I couldn't handle the alcohol without feeling like I caught a cold. Most times I didn't feel good was related to the alcohol I drank the day before.

Like Melissa, and some others, I only intend to drink very little and on rare occasions. The only problem I've had, is that there is some "custom" when going to the company presidents house, to have a cup of Sake before entering. One time, I acutally had a small amount, before noon on a Sunday, and thought I'd burn in He** for it; I ended up divorcing my wife by the end of that year!
Then, last year, I had to do it again, this time refusing because I wasn't feeling good. The company president said it was rude to reject such offer, and i ended up drinking a little bit...I got so ill from it two hours later, I went home and crashed for 3 or so hours. I ended up going to work two days later, to go to the hospital because I had gotten a fever! I also ended up leaving the company by the end of this year!

Thank GOD, I don't have to go to his house again!!

I actually thought I might be the only one who didn't drink, but if I do drink more than a can of beer, it's when I'm feeling ok, or I end up feeling terrible the next day (from one can of beer), and don't feel it's worth it.

Word of caution, anyone suffering from liver complications will increase the problem because the alcohol causes the liver to work O.T. wearing down the body...I never noticed much with the lungs, but it would make sense, because the alcohol exits the body by the breath and skin.

Alcohol is a diaretic so it is not good for anyone especially those that need to be dehydrated the least. I dont advocate getting trashed (I dont care how frequently) whether you have a mild case or severe case of CF. I have first hand experience of what alcohol can do to your body (under the best of circumstances) & ones life. I have outgrown the "need" of getting smashed or smartened up if you will. I know many people that go to their graves still needing at a ripe old age of getting bombed. Of course they are more than the mere social drinker. Then again they might have started out as a social drinker. Because of my experiences with alcohol I have grown bitter when I witness different things (which is my own issue I realize since I over analyze it) such as ads at local restraurants offering free champagne with new years dinner or people giving alcohol for Holiday gifts (which is ok if the person really drinks & drinks what you give) or in Fred's case, the social/business pressure of not being rude by rejecting the offer of a drink because its custum. I will stop now because I could turn this into a real A.A. meeting. Point being alcohol in excess is bad & not all alcohol has a health benefit like red wine has contrary to what people want to say.

this is completly unscientific, and i hope none of you try this at home and then come on here pissed at me...i dont reccomend it (ive never tried it) but i find this conversation interesting because my grandma is always telling me about moonshine (she's from the south) and how it can cut right through congestion if you drink it when you have a really bad cold or something. she's always wanted to try it on me, but she hasn't (a. we aren't in the south anymore, and b. i just turned 18...so i think she's planning something for a few years from now). anyways, i also heard that you can nebulize vodka and it would actually help with congestion.....again, i am not reccomending this in anyway...i just thought it was interesting, especially because of all the respones from people above. that after drinking congestion was worse.

I guess I could see how it would benefit from a neb vs being consumed orally. Like most meds the reactions vary depending strength & form it is taken in. I personally wont try it, but I bet someone already has or will. Whether they confess to it or not is another story.

We all love a good margarita. I think a little enjoyment in moderation. Too much of a good thing....
The other problem I'm thinking of is alcohol mixing with the many meds we CF'ers take. For example, I have Acid Reflux, for which I take Protonix. Acid Reflux meds basically zap most of your stomach acids (even the good ones) so you don't get the feeling of the acid. When alcohol goes down into your stomach-what do you think happens? Ouch! Most people with CF have trouble digesting in the first place, so hard liquor doesn't help.<img src="i/expressions/wine.gif" border="0">

I have always noticed that if I drink, I cough SO much the next day. it is really annoying, almost as if I have an allergy to it that makes me produce more mucous. I really have tried to cut down on how much I drink but its hard, especially around the holidays. I find that vodka is the best for making me the least symptomatic....wine is next, and beer is the worst. If i drink beer i get congested even in my nose and stuff. But vodka isnt bad, so i pretty much just drink martinis. That is really weird about nebulizing vodka...i dont think i would dare!

I don't drink very often.. but more and more lately I will have a glass of wine with dinner if I am out... I don't drink at home..

I have to be very careful to drink a ton of fluid for each glass of wine I drink though.. Usually when I am out, I oreder water and drink that with each glass of wine..and then when I get home I drink a ton of gatoraide.....I get dehydrated really easy so I have to be careful...

I think it is fine for us to drink a little bit as long as we are not on certain antibiotics...Every once in a while I go out with the gang from work and I will go for something a little stronger... but that is rare....

when i was younger i drank a lot.... and then i turned 18 (legal drinking age) and EVERY single night i was out, looking for the best pubs and clubs, drinking, getting drunk, getting sick, and then doing it the night after. my health really suffered, not only my lungs my liver too....i tihnk being in smokey clubs didnt help either! i look back on it now and think what was i enjoying about that?! i do still enjoy a drink but a lot less often and i can control the amount i drink now, drink in moderation and plenty of water between drinks.
