Allergic reaction to Augmentin?

DS' bronch came back with a bacteria, which I can't remember the name of right now, and showed inflammation in the right lower lobe. His sinus CT scan showed that his sinuses are a mess, he was diagnosed with chronic sinusitis and has air-fluid level in his right mastoid? His pulmo prescribed a 21 day course of Augmentin. Within a week, his chronic cough had stopped and I was so happy, but... then he developed hives and we took him to the doc and were told to stop the Augmentin immediately and they started him on Prednisone and Benadryl. He looked better the next day, but the day after that he woke up with his face and neck horribly swollen. His right eye was completely swollen shut and the left was nearly. We rushed him to the ER where they started IV steroids and admitted him to the PICU. By the next morning he was nearly completely recovered, phew! We continued the Prednisone for a few days and he's been fine. Tomorrow we go to the Pediatric Allergist to find out if this is an allergic reaction or a "serum sickness". Has anyone else experienced this with Augmentin or any other antibiotic?

i'm allergic to augmentin, vantin, and penicillin. i get hives with all of them. as soon as the hives appeared they stopped the medicine. i never had anything swell though. i can do iv fortaz. and that does have penicillin in it. but it doesn't have much to my understanding and i can tolerate it without any reaction.

That is quite a severe reaction you describe. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> I'm so sorry your son experienced this- how scary! Fortunately Emily has been spared this kind of reaction to any abx, but I've experienced a reaction quite similar (hives/rash, facial swelling eventually impacting my airway, followed by a worsening of the rash and skin peeling) to Bactrim. I was treated in a similar way- iv steroids, epinephrine & benadryl in the ER and then a home course of prednisone.

Serum sickness in response to an abx like amoxicillin or Augmentin is quite rare but if it occurs tx is similar to that of an allergic reaction- avoiding use in the future (since repeated use can cause more severe reactions- which is also the case when one has an allergy as severe as this), and tx with steroids and antihistamines.

Soph is allergic to Cef, she had an anaphylactic reaction on a first dose.

Her symptoms were flat hives, quickly followed by pale skin with very prominent red/purple hives, then swollen lips, swollen tongue, swollen throat and raised heart rate and sats dropped. This all happened within 2 minutes of having the drug. However allergies can happen at any time as antibiotics are in the system for a fair while before the body secretes them out.

It definately sounds like a possible allergic reaction and at least you'll get some answers from the allergist. Sorry you and your son had to experience this as it is a very scary situation and glad he has recovered well.

My dd seems to be allergic to every antibiotic she takes more than once or twice. She had a very similar reaction to Augmentin, swelling etc, so it is a no no for us as well.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I'm sorry to see that this is so common. Hopefully all of you have been able to find antibiotics that work and to which you are not allergic. It's terrible that this happens to people who need antibiotics so often!
