Allergic reaction to Augmentin?

Thanks to everyone who responded. I'm sorry to see that this is so common. Hopefully all of you have been able to find antibiotics that work and to which you are not allergic. It's terrible that this happens to people who need antibiotics so often!

I agree. We are still trying to figure out whether it is allergy or not. Our allergy specialist says it might be a manifestation of an infection, so we try to reintroduce the drug when my dd is healthy to see if we get a reaction as well.

I am allergic to Augmentin, along with Levaquin, Cipro, and Bactrim.

The allergies to antibiotics are quite common in CF due to us having to use them so frequently.

I'm allergic to fortaz, presumably all the other penicillian drugs, but I haven't had the pleasure to find out just yet. I had a reaction back last time I was in the hospital a couple months ago and it was quite a show. I even got an audience. By the end of it I had drawn in all the floor nurses, a respirtory therapist, the oncall doctor, and probably a few others. I've never seen so many people gathered into one room. Aparantely it was the most dramatic reaction they'd seen in a while. I swelled up like a balloon, my chest got all tight, vomitted far beyond what I thought I had eaten. I was still itchy the next day.

Thanks everyone. DS' allergy test came back negative. So now they are trying to figure out if it is "serum sickness" by putting him back on Augmentin for 10 days. This makes me so nervous, but I guess it is better to find out. If he doesn't have a reaction, then they are going to assume that it was a virus?

Allergic reaction to Augme

Was there anything else he could have possibly developed a reaction to during that time other than the abx? Did he try a new food? Combine an otc medication with the Augmentin? (Sometimes giving something like Motrin with an abx can trigger a reaction.) Come in contact with an animal or some other unusual environmental trigger for the first time...? I am wondering if something was missed if it's assumed it had been the drug.

At any rate, I'd be nervous too at re-starting the drug, even if it was serum sickness the med is still generally avoided in future so I am very surprised they are restarting it. I assume at first sign of any rash, swelling, fever, vomiting, or other sign of illness you will be rushing him to the hospital? He is at high risk for anaphylactic shock if he is indeed allergic despite the test result.

In our case when we reintroduced Augmentin to see if it was it that triggered the rash, they told us that if there is no reaction when my dd is healthy, it means the reaction was to infection and the drug itself. It turned out she was indeed allergic to the drug.

We had not tried any new foods or done anything out of the ordinary. DS has never had a reaction like that before. The hives started on the 10th day of taking the Augmentin, and the facial swelling occurred on would have been the 12th, but we stopped the Augmentin on the 10th day. He is now on day 4 of 10 and no reaction so far.
ymikhale - We were told the same thing, that if there is no reaction to Augmentin when he appears to be healthy, than it was due to the infection. How long did it take to see the reaction the 2nd time? Was it more severe?
Harriett - Yes, I will take him straight to the hospital. His teachers have been informed to watch out for the slightest sign. Even just the thought of anaphylactic shock is extremely frightening, his school is at least 45 minutes to the nearest hospital. Very, very scary.
