Allergic reaction to Augmentin?

We had not tried any new foods or done anything out of the ordinary. DS has never had a reaction like that before. The hives started on the 10th day of taking the Augmentin, and the facial swelling occurred on would have been the 12th, but we stopped the Augmentin on the 10th day. He is now on day 4 of 10 and no reaction so far.
ymikhale - We were told the same thing, that if there is no reaction to Augmentin when he appears to be healthy, than it was due to the infection. How long did it take to see the reaction the 2nd time? Was it more severe?
Harriett - Yes, I will take him straight to the hospital. His teachers have been informed to watch out for the slightest sign. Even just the thought of anaphylactic shock is extremely frightening, his school is at least 45 minutes to the nearest hospital. Very, very scary.

I don't recall exactly how long it took, but itwas similar to the first time, something like 8-10 days, but the reaction was not as sever, there was just a rash as opposed to facial swelling the first time.

Update: Serum sickness it is. Once again, on day 10, he broke out in hives. So far no facial swelling. DS can no longer take any Penicillin drugs. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with non-Penicillin antibiotics? I'm not sure the Augmentin was doing the trick anyway, because his cough is back.

Emily cannot take Augmentin either due to different type of adverse reaction. She has had good success with Bactrim (a sulfa) multiple times, which is very commonly used in those w/CF. When Bactrim alone hasn't been enough, Keflex (a cephalosporin) has been used in combination with it and recently she had a course of Levaquin (a fluoroquinolone) for a particularly nasty infection. I hope they find something good for him that works well.

I'm sorry he broke out again, but I am glad you got a clear answer and know now what to avoid.

we used Bactrim several times until she my dd got a reaction to it, will have to reintroduce it, the same story as Augmentin. Currently we are using Rifadine+Fucidine, it is like last resort but she had a slight reaction to it as well.
The best of luck
