So last night I had a little bit of a scare. I went to dinner and shopping with a friend last night, and the last store we went to was Michaels so I could get some yarn (christmas scarves). I noticed right away that there was a really wierd smell in the store (although my friend didn't notice). Well anyway, as I'm checking out and waiting for my friend, I ate a small Lindt chocolate truffle thing that they were selling by the checkout. I knew it might be over the top, as I was still pretty full from dinner, but I ate it anyway.

Right away, I started to get a stomach ache. I didn't think too much of it - kinda a self I told you so moment. But by the time I got home, my stomache hurt so bad! After a couple of hours it finally started to settle down (I fought the nausea, which I realize now that I should've let it happen), but then I noticed that my skin was really itchy - everywhere. My hands were the worst, and after about an hour, my hands/wrists and ears had all turned red and were really swollen! I had a couple of welts and rash marks all over, but I wasn't sure how much of it was from a reaction or my scratching.

By this time, its 1:30 in the morning, and I have no one to call. There is no hospital in my town, so I called an urgent care place close by, but they didn't have any nurses there. So then I called the nearest hopsital er, and got put on hold for the nurse. I hung up after 15 minutes of being on hold, figuring that it didn't seem like anything was getting any worse, and I would wait and see what it was like in the morning. Today I seem to be ok.

So I don't know what caused the reaction - it's the first time I have reacted to anything this way. I don't know if it was something in the candy, or one of the yarns I touched. It's a bummer for sure. I see the doctor tomorrow, but I'm a little freaked out now.

Could it have been something that you ate that you reacted to? Last Christmas I ate chocolate cherries and my face swelled up like a balloon, my eyes were nearly swollen shut! I had never reacted to them before but it is the only thing I havent eaten since and Ive never reacted since then. Just a thought.

Hi,
I did have such an allergic reaction two times (without stomach pain, but with red, itching skin allover) and I still don´t know why...First time it happend during a San Francisco vacation after visiting a japanese restaurant and drinking a Pina Colada. After some hours the symptoms were gone.
Second time it happend during my work in the office, so I went to a doctor and he gave me a injection (maybe calcium, but I´m not shure). I had eaten some fresh coconut the day before, so it could have been the coconut/Pina Colada, but I´m not shure, because I did drink/eat that again without any reaction.

How did your Dad summarize that he is not allergic to turkey or to cats, but he can not eat turkey when cats are around? Maybe he is worried about losing his turkey to the cat.....does the cat lick its chops while your Dad eats. LOL

Barb-
You should keep some benadryl available in the house. If that ever happens, just take some benedryl. Its an antihistamine so it will stop your bodies allergic reaction. That way if you are seriously allergic to something that will prevent it from getting serious. And that goes for an allergic reaction with meds or food or anything really.
